    The Rentals- Seven More Minutes

I'm writing this about three years after Seven More Minutes came out. I really must say this is one of my favourite albums I own (and I own about 650 cds) I've been a fan of Weezer for a long time, so when I heard Matt Sharp was doing a side proje...ct, I was excited. Their first album The Return Of The Rentals, was amazing. We then had to wait three years for Seven More Minutes to come out. And when I first listened to it, I was surprised it wasn't like Return... It was more rock, less Moog, and it was sort of...moody. I then read the lyrics, and I connected with this cd so much. I listen to it three times more then their first cd. I seriously recommend both cds to any one. They're both worth the price. Read more Less

Excellent Listen all the way through

I remember when I bought "Seven More Minutes" by the Rentals. This was their overdue sophomore release (after The Rentals great first album "Return of the Rentals"). I didn't expect too much from the album. I basically expected what most modern ba...nds release in these times, which is basically the same exact sound as their previous recordings. I was greatly wrong. I started play on the album and I was blown away. The Rentals' leader Matt Sharp strayed away from the heavy bass/synthesizer sound that was on the previous album. This was both appealing and surprising. The album is one of my favorite mood enhancers. The songs take you through a vast ocean of Matt Sharp's love, loss, and alcohol based adventure in a European landscape. The songs are all different and free in their own way (unlike the first album), from the mellowed out songs as "She says it's alright" and "My head is in the sun" to the fast paced air guitar-inspiring "Keep Sleeping", "Insomnia", and "Barcelona". I definitely recommend this album to anyone. And give the first release a chance too. Read more Less

Somewhere between the surprise success of The Return of the Rentals and the draining tour for Weezer's second album, Pinkerton, the Rentals became more than a side project for Matt Sharp. He wound up leaving Weezer and devoting himself to the Rentals, setting out to record their second record in London in late 1996. With the exception of Kevin March, who replaces Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson, the supporting band remains the same on Seven More Minutes as it does on the debut, but there's a major difference here. Where The Return of the Rentals was a kind of kitschy new wave tribute, Seven More Minutes is designed to prove that this is a real band, capable of all kinds of styles and sounds. To that effect, Sharp lined up an impressive list of guest artists to flesh out the sound even more. Not a bad idea in theory, but there's a problem that a record boasting cameos from Damon Albarn, Donna Matthews, Miki Berenyi and Tim Wheeler feels something like a Brit-pop hangover. To Sharp's credi...t, he throws out enough different styles to keep such impressions from solidifying, but that has a countereffect of making the record sound too diffuse, especially on initial plays. With repeated spins, several songs -- the dynamic opener "Getting By," the exuberant "Barcelona," the jangling "She Says It's Alright" -- catch hold, but the whole project never really jells. It may have been done as a lark, but The Return of the Rentals had a breezy sense of fun that gave it coherence. Seven More Minutes proves that the Rentals are more than just a side project, but it finds them searching for a distinctive identity when, ironically, they had one when they were just a side project. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

The Rentals

The Rentals was the New Wave-influenced project of singer/songwriter Matt Sharp, former bassist for power-pop favorites Weezer. Born in Arlington, VA on September 22, 1969, Sharp co-founded Weezer in 1992, and in the months to follow the band emerged as one of the most popular up-and-coming acts on the Los Angeles club scene; their self-titled debut LP appeared on Geffe... Read more
