Pro Reviews: Seven Inches of Love

  • All Music Guide

Seven Inches of Love is an unexpected Cybil of a record that swings from one genre to another without warning. On the A-side of "Girl I Love," for example, the Phoids capture a really melodic, guitar-based sound of power pop that's reminiscent of the Replacements. But on the flip of "Cars, Chicks, and Beers," the opening starts off with a formula of light strumming and a soft-spoken conversation that sounds exactly like the Minutemen's "History Lesson Part II" before the vocalist screeches with a Sam Kinison impression that breaks along with a three-chord romp of sloppy punk, before breaking down with a melodic, almost parodied ballad -- the latter of which questions how serious the A-side is. Despite the mood swings, the Phoids manage to provide a fun, unpredictable package that keeps the listener on their toes. Party.
