Pros: great listening and study material
Cons: 3 more songs wouldn't have hurt
to put things in perspective, i am an arranger (backing tracks, band & choral) & occasional composer, bass guitarist and play guitars, simple keys & drums as well.
this is the 1st time that i heard a sergio mendes album stray out of the bossa feel but veered to a jazz, funk, latin and mainstream jazz type of album. this collaboration with other arrangers gave a wide variety for each song's flavor. i got ideas for synth sounds, piano & keyboard comps, and of course lots of brass section material.
as a bass player, i would sit down and play with the whole album over and over and get amazed by the grooves the bass players layed in. nathan east, nathan watts, louis johnson (i think) did great work. this album, together with the manhattan transfer (mecca for moderns) and the disco funk albums (70s-80s) nailed me to the bass.
fave songs:
love is waiting - a slow groove but the arrangement just drives the song forward, nice comps, nice twists and turns - on all instruments. same as dream hunter, this time on a more aggressive playing.
rainbow's end and life in the movies - once in a lifetime chord progressions and arrangement ideas from a brilliant artist.
never gonna let you go - a good pop/jazz influence and a good pop chord progression idea.
voodoo, carnaval, si se ...
