Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran on the losing side of a galactic civil war, now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family - squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers - a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister - he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself. This is the feature film version of the late, lamented sci-fi cult TV series "Firefly."

Pros: Lots of action, minimal romance.

Cons: Lots of things were left unexplained, they killed my favorite character!!

This is not your typical review. I'm not out to convince you to watch the movie or make Firefly your new favorite show. I'm just out to tell it like it is. And that's what I am going to do. People will always have a difference of opinion.... If we all liked the same things, there would be no war and people wouldn't waste internet space complaining about people that do not like the same things that they do. The world would also be boring. So it evens out. I personally like Firefly and Serenity. I find the series to be a refreshing break from the six years I was forced to watch other people get caught up in the mediocre Star Wars prequels. The story was interesting and kept my attention. The characters were believable and in depth. The music kicked ass (though the CD did not compliment the movie) and the cinematography was excellent. It was a bit inconsistent from the series, but had the series been finished, I'm sure Joss would have led the story line right up to the movie. I'm going to take a quick break to be honest about the rest of Joss' work. I find Buffy and Angel to be cliché and a waste of television time slots that they should be giving to Firefly. So don't mistake me as a Joss Whedon fan because I am not. Also don't mistake me as a "brown coat." While I love the series and movie, I am an author and cinematographer myself so I do not get caught up in fandom. I simply appreciate good entertainment when it comes around. And Serenity was damn good entertainment. It's fresh, it's honest and it's a gem in a movie arena that's lacking in entertainment. For example; the first two Harry Potter films were good. Then they decided to take it in 'a new direction,' and have the characters wear modern clothing. And lord help us all. Whenever a director says they are going to take a film in a 'new direction,' run away as fast as you can. Because anything they make after that statement will be crap. The last two Harry Potter films were just that. But really I am getting off topic. After being exposed to so much lack of vision, it was nice to see something that was fresh and exciting. I am looking forward to the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe for the same reason. I found the story to be superb and enthralling. I found the universe to be unique and eye opening. I thought it was cool that they cussed in Chinese. Any story where there's a good plot, action, minimal romance and great character development is ok in my book. And Serenity has all of these elements. You can choose to agree or disagree. Difference in opinion is what makes the world go round. But I personally think the series is awesome and should not be overlooked. We have plenty of crappie movies and TV series wasting air space. I'm glad that Joss restored my faith in media. And that in itself is amazing. Read more Less

    Pros: Some questions were answered

Cons: I do not like to see main characters get killed off.

I am an absolute fan of the series Firefly and still carry the torch for it's reinception with the original cast and Joss Weldon of course! Anyways back to Serenity. Serenity, in my opinion, was meant to statisfy the fans of Firefly who found Fox&...#39;s cancelation of the series after half a season very unsatisfactory. There were so many things we all were wanting to know. Like what would become of River? What had they done to her and why? Would the Doc and Kaylee ever be able to have a relationship or would he continue to only think of keeping his sister safe(honorable to a fault he is, and cute too!)? Would Mal and the "ambassodor-ess"
; get past what ever was keeping them apart so Mal could stand up and admit he loved her? There were a lot of other questions too and it is just awful to get hooked on a show, come to identify with the characters in some way and then have the rug pulled out from under your veiwing pleasure by the network and their idea of what makes a buck. I still beleive they killed a real money maker when they were too afraid to continue firefly. The movie does answer some questions but there just is not enough time for them all and in my mind it opened up many new questions. I enjoyed the movie as it seemed the actors were able to just pickup like only a little bit of time went by on Serenity(the ship they all live on) since they left off in the series. They are all excellent in their respective roles and play off each other in such a way that makes for a satisfyingly disfunctional but loyal family. The last part of the movie was very far from what I would have chosen to write. Jeeze you dont kill off part of the family! This is entertainment, it serves to let us escape "reality" for a short time and observe a world that exists to distract us from real lifes worries and such. There is pain and death of those we care about in real life I dont want to see real life in a sci-fantasy movie! So Joss "why kill off a main character?" Too sum it up I did enjoy the movie. It was well done, well acted, and it was visually intense. Ending was good but it had to end which all good things do....unfortunately. I imagine it would be nessasary to buy the series on DVD and watch that first howerver before watching the movie.
