    Music:

    A DEEP D&B album

    By Jas  Apr 30, 2007

    Pros: Not like anything else

Cons: You need to be in the mood for something deep

This was one of the first d&b albums I ever bought back in 1994. I had heard TPower's single 'Mutant Jazz' before and liked the very smooth, yet metallic vibe. This album goes one step further with it's opening track setting the scene... for what's to come - a long introduction that promises a deep musical journey, almost like sitting in a shuttle waiting for a take off into space. I often use this album for quite reflection, which is ironic considering that this is a drum and bass album!! The album has beats, and they get crazy sometimes but that still does detract from the underlying feeling of deep mysticism, awe and wonder. This album is different to the LTJ Bukem and Good Looking Records sound - I was/am a big fan of that style of drum'n'bass - but TPower tapped into something very deep here, a kind of emotion that stays with you. I think the title of this album says it all. The 'Police State' EP was also very much in the same vane as this album. This album, for me, will go down as one of the landmark albums of my collection. Thanks to Marc Royal (TPower) for capturing these emotions and immortalising them in this album. Peace. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Self-Evident Truth of an Intuitive Mind

  • All Music Guide

T.Power's Self-Evident Truth was one of the first full-length releases in jungle, and at that one of its first concept albums. Split into two records -- one each chronicling emotion and intellect -- T.Power's tight, raucous blend of jungle's twisting, mutating percussion with ambient-style melodic themes is best stated here. It's a bit sugar-coated at times, with long, syrupy melodic passages often taking the place of more creative song development, but the album's rhythmic tweak is often so severe you hardly notice.

Biography

T.Power

TPower's Mark Royal first came to prominence working with hardcore techno group Bass Selective, whose 1991 hit "Blow Out Part II" was an influential proto-jungle track. He's since risen to new acclaim as a solo artist with TPower's experimental blend of lush ambience and often over-the-top rhythmic complexity. His 12-inch "Horny Mutant Jazz," as well as the follow-up fu... Read more
