I agree, the first "Selected Ambient Works" is Aphex's best album. For those who have yet to experience the creations of Richard D. James' rather twisted mind, this is not the best place to start. Go and buy the afore mentioned S.A.W., "Richard D. Ja...mes Album" or "Polygon Window - Surfing on Sine Waves". That aside, this is one of Aphex's best albums, so once you've familiarised yourself with his music, pick it up. This is *VERY* minimal, but it's a definite case of "less is more", or something... and track 7 on CD 1 rules. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2

  • All Music Guide

Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2 is a more difficult and challenging album than Aphex Twin's previous collection. The music is all texture; there are only the faintest traces of beats and forward movement. Instead, all of these untitled tracks are long, unsettling electronic soundscapes, alternately quiet and confrontational; although most of the music is rather subdued, it is never easy listening. While some listeners may find this double-disc album dull (both discs run over 70 minutes), many listeners will be intrigued and fascinated by the intricately detailed music of Aphex Twin.

Biography

Aphex Twin

Exploring the experimental possibilities inherent in acid and ambience, the two major influences on home-listening techno during the late '80s, Richard D. James' recordings as Aphex Twin brought him more critical praise than any other electronic artist during the 1990s. Though his first major single "Didgeridoo" was a piece of acid thrash designed to tire dancers during... Read more
