One of Japan's leading pop singers, Seiko Matsuda (born Noriko Kamachi) has increasingly geared her music to listeners in the western world. Her albums Was It the Future and Vanity Fair were produced by American pop singer Robbie Nevil. While Was It the Future was heavily influenced by Motown and included a soulful rendition of the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Tarrell duet "Your Precious Love," Vanity Fair included a dance tune, "Anata Ni Aitakiete," cowritten with Nevil. Seiko recorded an English version of her song "Anata No Subete Ni Naritai (Forever Your Everything)" in 1992. Recording her debut single, "Aoi Sangosho," in 1980, Seiko was an immediate success. The song's popularity resulted in Seiko receiving a grand prize as Best New Singer of the Year. Seiko's subsequent hits include "Sukeki Ni Once Again," "Kagayaita Kisetsue Tabidato," "Hadashi No Kisetsu," "Aoi Sangoshou," "Natsu No Tobira," "Shiroi Parasoru," and "Akai Sweet Pea." Married to Japanese actor Kanda Masaki, Seiko has nonetheless been plagued by a series of scandals regarding her personal life and severely criticized for her use of makeup. In addition to her career as a vocalist, Seiko has sought a variety of outlets for her creativity. She appeared in her first film, Yume De Aetera, in 1982.
