    Jay played an incredible acoustic set in Lawrence, Kansas last night and my friends and I drove nearly a hundred miles round trip to hear him sing. His country roots are interwoven with rock and the result is an unmatched ascetic aesthetic that prob...es and purges the soul. The best voice in all of alt-country. Buy his solo album as it's yet another great project...or at least buy a voodoo candle. Read more Less

    Jay's best work yet

    Over the last 10 years, I have purchased all of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt's releases, and Jay's solo CD is the first one that I would classify as "catchy". And that's not neccesarily a bad thing. On this album, it seems he had more freedom to expe...riment outside the constraints of a guitar band, adding plenty of keyboards, slide guitar, and even a little bit of sax. It's a big departure from UT or Son Volt, but immediately recognizable as Jay Farrar. The songwriting is superior to any of Jay's previous releases. Hopefully, he will continue to use some guest musicians in future work because they seem to have brought new influences to his work, which had been starting to get predictable. Definintely 5 stars, along the lines of Car Wheels on a Gravel Road or Tonight's the Night. Read more Less

    I was fortunate enough to see Jay live last week on his solo tour. Not only did he play most of "Sebastopol" but he dipped into his bag to play numerous Son Volt songs and even 1 Uncle Tupelo favorite. "Sebastopol" has to be one of the top 5 albums... of the year. It finds Jay moving in other directions. He still has his alt-country roots but he's expanding beyond that on this album. Highlites include "Feedkill Chain", "Clear Day Thunder" "Voodoo Candle" and "Vitamins". Read more Less

    Beautiful album. In the line of progression from Wide Swing Tremolo's experimentation. Yet it still has the uncomfortable feel of Straightaways. Good, but could have been better.
