South African expatriate and reed player Sean Bergin was part of a fairly large-scale diaspora of musicians from that country who, beginning in the 1960s, migrated to Europe searching both for a freer political climate and a wider range of performance opportunities. Bergin settled in the Netherlands and quickly began working with many of the most forward-looking jazz musicians on the scene.
