Introducing smooth melodies of pop supported by the captivating voice of Ashley Keylin, Scout's melodies also retain some of the most essential indie rock style traditions. Keylin and drummer Nigel Rawles, who met at an early age in Michigan, decided to assemble the band after moving to New York in the beginning of the '90s. In 1997, the distinguished vocals of Keylin enraptured the attention of Chrysalis Music, therefore providing the duo the opportunity to record their first disc. The EP Someplace Would Be Nice hit the record stores in 1998 to significant acclaim, surrounding the band's creations with considerable enthusiasm. After signing a new deal in 1999, this time with ModMusic Records, they entered the studio to record their debut album. It Seemed Like a Good Idea distributed in 2000, reaffirmed Scout as a band on the rise. Playing with bands such as Smash Mouth or They Might Be Giants during the extended tour that followed, Scout also appeared on an episode of the award-winning series The Sopranos. Following the additions of bassist Joe Santana (previously playing with the Autumns) and of guitarist Elliot Chenault, Scout continued to promote their debut album on numerous live occasions.
