Great Follow-up to Hunting High and Low

By George Evans  May 26, 2001

It would have been hard for any group to follow-up a debut as successful as a-ha's first release. However, it was made even more difficult by the fact that a-ha was determined to escape the "pretty-boy" band image that had been artfully crafted. To...ny Mansfield, producer of Hunting High & Low, and probably the single biggest factor in the marketing of that album, was gone. And so is some of the "accessibility" or "radio friendlieness" in favor of substance. While perhaps some were expecting more of "Take On Me", Scoundrel Days presents songs that are much more challenging. Take the time as it will be well rewarded. While it will take more than a listen or two, Scoundrel Days will soon become a favorite. The Swing of Things, Manhattan Skyline, Maybe Maybe and Soft Rains of April give the listener a hint of what is to come next from a-ha. Read more Less

    Scoundrel Review

    By Goddess  Mar 16, 2001

This album offers a unique coupling of haunting, melancholy lyrisc, with hopeful, bright musicianship. It carries a mixture of emotionally infectious and lightheartedly upbeat songs. A must-hear!

While not quite as strong as the band's debut, Scoundrel Days is still a-ha succeeding as a marketed "pretty boy" band which can connect musically and lyrically as much as any musical sacred cow. The opening two songs alone make for one of the best one-two opening punches around: the tense edge of the title track, featuring one of Morten Harket's soaring vocals during the chorus and a crisp, pristine punch in the music, and "The Swing of Things," a moody, elegant number with a beautiful synth/guitar arrangement (plus some fine drumming courtesy of studio pro Michael Sturgis) and utterly lovelorn lyrical sentiments that balance on the edge of being overheated without quite going over. Although the rest of the disc never quite hits as high as the opening, it comes close more often than not. A definite downturn is the band's occasional attempts to try and prove themselves as a "real" band by rocking out, as on "I've Been Losing You" -- there's really no need for it, and as a result they s...ound much more "fake," ironically enough. Other songs can perhaps only be explained by the need to translate lyrics -- "We're Looking for the Whales" isn't an environmental anthem, and neither is "Cry Wolf," but both also don't really succeed in using nature as romantic metaphor. When a-ha are on, though, they're on -- "October" snakes along on a cool bass/keyboard arrangement and a whispery vocal from Harket; "Maybe Maybe" is a quirky little pop number that's engagingly goofy; while "Soft Rains of April" captures the band at its most dramatic, with the string synths giving Harket a perfect bed to launch into a lovely vocal, concluding with a sudden, hushed whisper. The '80s may be long gone, but Scoundrel Days makes clear that not everything was bad back then. - Ned Raggett, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

a-ha

Pal Waaktaar and Magne Furuholmen, formerly of Bridges formed a-ha in the early '80s. Morten Harket joined the duo, and they left for the now 'legendary London flat' (so called because of its state of disrepair) to make it. By late 1983 they had achieved part of that goal by signing to WEA. "Take on Me" took three times to become a hit in the UK, eventually hitting 2 in... Read more
