    first cd fab, second crap!

    By Christian  May 4, 2000

the first disc of this b- sides collection is awesome, every track is excellent. where the pigs don' t fly, the big time or he' s dead could have been some of the best tracks on their first two albums. shame about the second, post- bernard butler di...sc, containing all the b- sides from their weak third album: most songs are just simple pop-throwaways with no edges. there' s only one exception: the beautiful europe is our playground is the best song suede have ever recorded. amazing. Trash has never sounded this good...

    By Christopher  Apr 21, 2000

Logically, Suede are ludicrous. When I studied in Brighton, England for a year, I realised that the place they are from is ludicrous as well. 90's England is beautiful, vibrant, crumbling, passionate, lazy, and stifling all at once. So are Suede, on...e of the best bands of the decade and possibly ever. This is the litter of their 3 albums, B-sides to the singles released, and it is still so incredible that you have to listen to it twice just to get over it. In a decade that saw rock American rock take itself far too seriously and British pop view itself with a little too much irony, this band managed to merge the sheer impact Americans have at thier best with the articulation and style that Brits have at thiers. But more than that, Suede have the epic quality to thier work that only the best bands (ie The Cure, Pink Floyd, Massive Attack)can pull off without seeming pretentious (ie Smashing Pumpkins, Manic Street Preachers, Pink Floyd). Of 27 songs, only 1 or 2 weak tracks. Highlights include He's Dead for the coolest riff ever, High Rising for sheer grandiose scope, Whipsnade for reflective shimmering, This Time for that kind of misery so bad its beautiful, and These Are The Sad songs for intensity. Enjoy this distillation of one of the most important bands of the 90's. Read more Less

Few debut singles have the impact of Suede's "The Drowners," which helped set the course to Britpop and established Suede as one of the U.K.'s most important bands. In that light, it isn't surprising that the Bsides were considered as important as the Aside the slow, grinding "My Insatiable One" was covered in concerts by Morrissey weeks after its release, while the band often closed shows with the majestic "To the Birds." The strength of the "Drowners" Bsides wasn't an anomaly it established a precedent of highquality Bsides that Suede strove to maintain on their first three albums. The doubledisc SciFi Lullabies collects the majority of those Bsides, leaving behind the odd live track and remix, as well as the worthy "Painted People" and "Asda Town" and the nonLP single "Stay Together." What's included is stellar, offering an alternate history of Suede. In fact, the first disc comprised of Suede and Dog Man Star Bsides, plus the haunting "Europe Is Our Playground" is as strong as ...any of their albums, featuring such essentials as the sleazy "He's Dead," "The Living Dead," "My Dark Star," the storming "Killing of a Flash Boy," the sighing "Where the Pigs Don't Fly," and "Whipsnade," all strong enough to be Asides. Disc two isn't quite as consistent, which might be because they're all drawn from the singles for Coming Up, but it does find the band exploring their darker, more adventurous side, which they largely suppressed on that record. Unlike most Bsides compilations, SciFi Lullabies is far from extraneous for any Suede fan, and most fans of contemporary Britpop, this is absolutely essential material, confirming the group's status as one of the '90s' greatest bands. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Suede

Suede kick-started the Brit-pop revolution of the '90s, bringing English indie pop/rock music away from the swirling layers of shoegazing and dance-pop fusions of Madchester, and reinstating such conventions of British pop as mystique and the three-minute single. Before the band had even released a single, the U.K. weekly music press was proclaiming them as the "Best Ne... Read more
