Alice Cooper - Schools Out (1972)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 11, 2006

    Pros: Some good moments....title track....etc

Cons: Some places kinda drag badly....

The Coop's 5th studio album...School's out released in 1972...Is a very mis-mash of songs that kinda dont equal as the rest of the original band's releases between '69-74. "Hodge Podge" could be used I believe as a fitting t...itle of this album, probaly the band's weakest together in this period. The opener "Schools Out" kicks off the aptly named album...a mega hit and most over played song on the day school is let out...The main riff is one by Glen Buxton, the lead guitarist and most underlooked player ever... and is pretty much the most famous riff in the Coops catalouge. "Luney Tune" is a little pleasant enough song, more average Cooper material than anything but keeps your attention throughout..."Gutter Cat VS The Jets" is up next and borrows heavily from "West side story"...The bass line in it by Dennis Dunaway is pretty hypnotic...crashes into a 1 min bit of "Street fight" which is basically that with Dunaway's menacing bass line and a cat screaming. "Blue Turk" closes off the first half and isnt too bad of a track but not really what Coop was doing in this time period, interesting enough though to say the least. The 2nd strongest track here next to 'Schools Out' would have to be this one..."My Stars" with some excellent playing by Michael Bruce and Glen Buxton...Dick Wagner is somewhere on this too...his first sessionwork for the Coop and upcoming sideman and songwriter. "Public animal #9" is up next and is a pretty decent Cooper track...more menacing and familiar with the better work in this period...The lyrics are pretty hilarious too...as well as the next one "Alma mater" where Coop sings bout his old high school's along with other band members...Cortez High and Camelback I believe...I wasnt sure if Neal Smith was singing this, the drummer...or not..its wrote by him so i'm not sure there...tells you to "Remember the Coop". The closer is just a instrumental with more bits of 'West Side' thrown in as well as some other things, nothing really special...kinda a letdown ending it this way. Summing it up...Alice's probaly weakest earlier album...the original packaging though of this was the complete opposite...it folded out as a actual school desk like the cover suggests with a report card in it and the record had a pair of paper panties encased over it. Collectable now...but hard to find. RR Read more Less

    Alice Cooper's worst album

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 30, 2001

Alice Cooper is one of my favorite bands but their 1972 release School's Out is a few steps below Love it to Death and Killer. Other than the hit single School's Out this album is boring and weak.
