    Scarlett--I saw red

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 24, 2006 | 2 out of 2 found this Scarlett (1994) review helpful

Pros: Sean Bean, one of the greatest actors of our time, is in it.

    Cons: Everything else about it.

First, the scenes between Timothy Dalton and Annabeth Gish were so tedious, they could have and in fact should have been handled by narrative. Second, none of the performers (save Paul Winfield) who played the characters we saw in GWTW were anywhere ...near close to the caliber of the original actors--it was quite a let down. Third, Jean Smart's character was over played and unnecessary. Fourth, I'm sorry to say that in that period of our country's history, there is no way Big Sam would have been accepted as a merchant in the South--nor would he have been able to be so "educated" in his manner. Fifth, the musical score was completely out of sync with both the mood and the time period of the film. Sixth, I love Sean Bean--he and Colm Meany both gave excellent performances, but that wasn't enough to save this production. And finally, speaking as a Southern woman, our Katie Scarlett would NEVER have gone on a fox hunt without wearing her riding gloves. I own this DVD because I collect Sean's work, but otherwise it is a waste of your time to watch. You'll never get those hours back! Read more Less

    I LIKED IT!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 30, 2006 | 1 out of 1 found this Scarlett (1994) review helpful

Pros: No longer a cliff hanger!

    Cons: acting was awful!

Okay, so this movie had a lot of glitches, wasn't very well thought out, and had some horrible acting, but I was still glued to the TV. Gone With the Wind left me sobbing in tears on the edge of my seat about to jump through my TV so i could find... out what happened. This is the main reason i adored Scarlett. It answered all the questions I so badly wanted answered. Yes it was a terrible movie, and whats-her-face was sure as heck no Vivian Leigh, and Rhet was no Clark Gable, but the story is great and very unpredictable and finally I had some GWTW closure! I bought it and I sugguest you do too! Read more Less

    "Scarlett" the Movie-why bother?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 25, 2002 | 1 out of 1 found this Scarlett (1994) review helpful

I myself am a diehard fan of G.W.T.W. And when the book "Scarlett" came out, I kicked and screamed with all the other fans! Curious, I finally read the book and enjoyed it throughly! Then the movie is released and I was excited, my bad!! It was a ho...rrible waste of my time and the studio's money! The people who made the movie didn't read G.W.T.W. let alone the book that they were SUPPOSE to be portraying! The actor's (whom I normally like) over acted and in my opinion "Scarlett" the movie was a huge disappointment! Read the book, it's enjoyable and worth the time.If your from another planet and have never heard of "Scarlett O'Hara" or "Gone With the Wind", then you might(?) enjoy this movie. So I give it one star! Read more Less

    Scarlett

Pros: Good on its own - but it's not the sequel to GWTW

    Cons: Overacting, silly.

When I read the book I thought "This is Scarlett? I don't think so. It's like she had a frontal lobotomy." Our Scarlett would never have acted like that. The book on its own merits was an excellent story......the TV movie stunk. Se...an Bean - well he can put his boots under my canopy bed any time, and Timothy Dalton is a very handsome man, but the movie does not hold a candle to the book. Sorry...... Read more Less

A far cry from the author's vision...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 18, 2006

    Pros: Good scenery...

    Cons: Too many to count...

I was just ten years old the first time I saw GWTW. Ten years old and it struck such a powerful chord with me and was an instant favorite. Vivien Leigh was vivacious and dazzling... Clark Gable was masculine and dark and sexy. At 12, I read Scarlett ...and enjoyed the book, as I have most of Alexandra Ripley's work. I remember very clearly sitting down in front of the TV to watch the Scarlett mini-series with my mother... and it was such a disappointment. It not only fell short of the original movie, but it also did the book a great injustice. Tomothy Dalton's overacting was hideous... and while I would not refer to Joanne Whalley as ugly or bug-eyed as another reviewer has suggested, I'll just say she was no Vivien Leigh. She possessed neither the charm nor the vivacity that Miss Leigh originally brought to the character. My husband sat down and watched GWTW with me... I don't have the heart to subject him to Scarlett. In short- 8 very painful hours that I will never have back. Read more Less

    This Movie Sucked!!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 20, 2006

    Pros: backgrounds

    Cons: everything else!

This movie deeply-DEEPLY dissapointed me! I have been a devoted gone with the wind fan ever since I first saw it. I know everything thing there is to know about that movie. Scarlett was so bad it hurt my feelings! The beautiful and infuriating Scarle...tt O'Hara who was played by the talented and charming Vivein Leigh was smashed as the ugly and bug-eyed Joanne Whalley Kilmer stepped in for the prized role. First off Mrs. Whalley was sooo ugly and so bug-eyed that it stung my eyes nearly to behold her on the screen. I thought she was a horrible actress for this part and she was to cheesey. I couldn't tell this was the Scarlett in the first movie-I know she changed but, still just Blahh!!!! The dashing and handsome Rhett Butler who was played by one of America's most famous actors-Clark Gable, who isn't to bad-looking himself, was utterley ruined by the ugly and butt chined timothy Dalton. The now over weight and balding Timothy Dalton played our Rhett Butler with such horrible acting I had to throw up. He is NOTHING like the Rhett Butler we all imagined. His acting is distgustingly disturbing and sickening-he doesn't have enough hair for this role and his over-sized mustache deeply creeped me out. His acting is so appualing that I have no words to discribe it! Plus he has a butt chin. The honorable and intelligent Ashley Wilkes who was played by the intelligent and dignified Lesley Howard was a perfect match. But, yet again a man named Stephen Collins came and ruined him too! The Ashley in this version is just dumb and absoloultly stupid!!!! I also can't describe the graphic horrible acting he did in this movie. The only good acting I enjoyed was Lord Fenton played by Sean Bean. I also enjoyed the backgrounds but, the costumes were horrible!!!! I bought this because I loved Gone with the wind but, now it is merley to make fun of with my friend. If you have the humor we do then you should enjoy making fun of it. It is not a very good serious movie to watch. The only reasons it deserves two stars is because it is fun to make fun of. It did not meet my expectations and I don't think I would recommend it to anyone other than for them to make fun of it. Plus Rhett has a butt chin which is creepy because Clark Gable had a good no-butt-chin! Thanks for reading, hope it helped!!! Read more Less

    SCARLETT

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 11, 2005

Pros: Timothy Dalton was in it!

Cons: This TV movie should NEVER have been made!

When GONE WITH THE WIND was written by Margaret Mitchell and subsequently made into MGM's Oscar winning film of 1939 it should have NEVER had a sequel written! If I'm not mistaken, Ms. Mitchell did attempt one herself but found that her one h...uge wonderful novel needed no other book nor TV movie to follow it. As her words ended GONE WITH THE WIND..."She could get Rhett back. She knew she could. ...I'll think of it all tomorrow, at Tara....After all, tomorrow is another day." As for the SCARLETT mini-series, Timothy Dalton is the only actor who could "attempt" to recreate "Rhett Butler." This is the ONLY time he fell short of a character's portrayal. Hey! No insults to Clark Gable but he couldn't portray "Heathcliff" nor "Edward Fairfax Rochester" (or ANY OTHER character) as Timothy Dalton did! :-)(In my mind, Mr. Dalton did a better job of BOTH characters than did Sir Laurence Olivier or Orson Welles when they portrayed those two "immortal beings" thanks to the Brontes!) Back to SCARLETT, like I said..."Timothy Dalton was in it!" Janet Molyneaux, South Carolina USA Read more Less

    One of my favorite films.........

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 3, 2004

Pros: everything about this movie is a pro

    Cons: none come to mind

I have always been a huge fan of "Gone With the Wind." I have seen it more times than I could possibly count and own it both on VHS and DVD. Being the fan that I am I can honestly say that I found "Scarlett" both entertaining, a...nd brilliant. Very many miniseries and made-for-tv movies are cheated the respect they deserve. My opinion of this film is based on many factors, the fact that it has a gritty "real life" quality that many period movies made in the first 1/2 of the 20th century are seriously lacking in. I also loved the use of color and light wonderful, almost an attempt to relive the days of technicolor. I admit that at times Joanne Whalley-Kilmer's acting was a little over the top, but so is the character that she portrays so that's understandable. Overall, this movie is one of my favorite movies of all time. I know how cheesy that sounds, but it appeals to me.And to answer the question of "gabby" Jean smart plays Sally Bruton, a life long friend of Rhett's. And Scarlett is played by Joanne Whalley-Kilmer (Val Kilmer's wife, who starred in the movie "Willow" along side him) Read more Less

Scarlett the Movie, not the sequel to GW

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 11, 2000

For the die hard fans of Gone With the Wind, Scarlett was a disappointment. Margarett Mitchell took with her the heart and soul of her beloved characters. This film is the based from the novel of the same title which was written by someone who only ...bothered to watch the movie and never lifted a page of Margarett Mitchell's genius in writing. Scarlett stands on its own as a good film and is very enjoyable to the viewer. A true fan of GWTW will notice some very important details have been omitted or changed. The loveliness of Scarlett and the dark good looks of Rhett are switched. This does not take away entirely from the charm of the time period and the freshness of the character played by Jean Smart. The performance of this movie pales because of its sequel status, but should not deter anyone from enjoying its content. The movie did remember the most important thing about its title character, Scarlett always gets her man. Read more Less

    Outstanding romance

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 14, 2005 | 0 out of 1 found this Scarlett (1994) review helpful

    Pros: Original and simple

    Cons: Missing the old climat

Just amazing. Great story and good continuation of my favourite "gone with the wind". Rett is pretty convincing, Scarlett outspoken as she should be. And Sean Bean - his character is developed in a very interesting way. I miss a climate of ...an old movie from 1939, nevertheless I think that is worth seing even if you don't like tha kind of movies. Sometimes you have do give a damn and think about everything tomorrow. Read more Less
