Williams played with many of the top big bands of the '20s, '30s, and '40s, yet beginning in 1940 he did some of his finest work as a member of Sidney Bechet-led small bands. Williams moved to Washington, D.C. as a small child. After the death of his parents he was sent to an industrial school in Delaware, where he played in the band.
