    Pros: Plays DVDs acceptably

    Cons: Slow; wouldn't play Blu-Ray

    I've never owned a player of any kind that took so long to go from "on" to "ready to do something" -- often a full minute or more. Then the very first Blu-Ray disc that I tried to play -- wouldn't. No feedback on why, it j...ust thought about it for several minutes and then pushed it back out the front. Only then did I remember the full page of excuses in the owner's guide about how it might not play this or that format, and in fact might not play standard logo-marked Blu-Rays. It played ordinary DVDs just fine so it's not a fault of the reader -- it just can't recognize the discs it's made for, apparently. It's going back to the store. The wrong people won the format war!     Like Toshiba's excellent HD-XA2, the BD-P1200 uses Silicon Optix' REON chip. As such, it offers excellent scaling and processing. This chip, while not cheap, is one of the best going at the moment for video processing. Read more
