I was shopping for a file server, when I saw that the one Linksys has had a serious problem with the firmware in that it would not allow files to be written by someone else (by the way they said they released a firmware that fixed that) I then proceeded to go with SMC. It looked like they had more for the less, 4 hot swappable drives, great! 4 Nics that you can connect to your switch for highest speed, cool! Nice looking device. Following the instructions it says to copy the utility CD to the computer, well, there is one folder called NASdiscoveryutility, probably bad translation, but anyhow, it then said to execute the java installer from the same folder, but that file was not there. I got it from the Net. It mentioned to do a hard reset when starting on the device at first, to wait for the flashing RAID light before releasing the reset. The light barely flashes, I mean, it takes about 3 seconds between each flash. Then, it said to execute an HTML file which has scripts to do a network search for the discovery of the device. If all what was mentioned would have been all, I would have never bothered to mention it. But, the device just will NOT get found. After douzens of times, and hours of trying this or that, no go. Asked Tech support, first level told me to use the exe file for the discovery tool. This is no where in the instruction flyer nor on the PDF documents. But, it was mentioned as if this was vital for it to work. Level 2 tech sent me an EXE file with a ndisprot.sys file which I was suppose to install. Windows is looking for an Inf file, not a sys file. I tried one ndisprot.inf from the net, but the tool is giving out errors, so I am back to square 0. I will be getting back with tech support to see what else. It may be the device is defective. Anyhow, this has been my experience so far with this device. ...
