| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Ruby is Buck Owens' bluegrass album, a fact that arouses a certain amount of interest by itself. Owens' bright, electrified stylewhich has come to be known as the Bakersfield soundisn't all that far removed from bluegrass since both forms tend to be energetic and trebly. Don Rich has always been celebrated for his expert fiddling as well as his guitar playing, and Ruby makes extensive use of his dexterity with a bow. Rich and Doyle Singer provide the high harmonies behind Owens' lead vocal and the trio achieves a massed vocal effect in places that is quite stirring. Owens takes a fairly traditional approach to bluegrass, covering a number of the most popular songs in the field ("Uncle Pen," "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms," "Salty Dog Blues," etc) with mostly acoustic instrumentation. His combo includes a drummer and an organ (listed, with a wink, as "bluegrass organ" in the credits), but acoustic guitars, fiddles and banjos predominate.
