Roy Hall (real name: James Faye Hall) was born in Big Stone Gap, VA, on May 7, 1922. Legend has it that he was taught to play the piano by a hardened drunkard in his hometown, giving him amazing piano skills and a drinking problem at the age of 21. While this is highly doubtful, he did leave town at that age to seek fame, making Bristol his base while he toured the south. His hard playing and hillbilly vocals endeared him to the piano-bar patrons, and he eventually built up a strong enough fan...
