Synopsis: Round Midnight (1986)

Synopis: 'ROUND MIDNIGHT is the moving story of an expatriate black jazz musician and his struggle to create the bebop sound in 1959 Paris. Dexter Gordon is sensational in the lead role--he earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Dale Turner--and Herbie Hancock, who appears in the film, was nominated for his score. Director Bertrand Tavernier beautifully captures the many joys and sorrows that encompass the jazz world.

   Dexter Gordon is no actor, he's much
   better than that. He is the real thing.
   Luckily the director just let him be,
   and he dominates your feeling like no other actor I have ever seen. Combine
   that with a good story and fantastic
   cinematography and you get one of the
   best movies of all times. It's that good. And the jazz is not bad either.
   Bud Powell would have agreed. (They
   probably enjoy it together now.) ...

   What a delight it is to see a finely made film with soulful, moving acting. Round Midnight is a personal favorite because of the beautiful relationship between the 2 men at the center of the story: one, a burned-out jazz musician expatriate; the other, an emotionally turbulent fan. The two men slowly develop a profound trust and love for one another in a truly touching way. At the center of this movie is a wonderful score by Herbie Hancock, rich in the bebop jazz sounds of the '50s. Richly photographed and sensually lit, this is movie entertainment at its finest. Not to be missed. ...
