    History at its Best

Even though the series was the view of 1 family line the story tells the truth of american history!!! The focus was more on the Dark Side of Slavery but there isn't a bright side if you think about it.

Its Impact Is Still Felt Today.

Pros: The Greatest Mini-series of All Time.

Cons: They don't Show It Often.

I watched this mini-series as a kid and proud I watched it with my family. This series was a historical drama and presented the viewpoint of African Americans told in an nonstereotypical manner. All I can say is that Roots should be required viewing... because although it shows the shameful legacy of Slavery and Jim Crow and how it affects African Americans today. I would watch the series on TV One and recommend it to anyone who hasn't watched it yet. Yes the violence is hard to watch, the difference between the violence you see in movies and in Roots is that the brutality actually happened. If you don't watch it on TV One, rent it and support this drama that deserves to be seen. Read more Less

    Pros: The truth was revealed!

Cons: Made me sick to my stomach observing the agony!

Excellent review of agony of one of many kidnapped and stolen young individual from his native land and sold as an African slave!! I wonder how any religious individual could carry on with the tortures and inhumane mannerism towards another person ju...st because of his color!! I am also glad that after so many generations some freedom has been achieved. But, that freedom is not complete yet. Read more Less

    WHEN WILL IT EVER END?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 6, 2002

WHEN WILL IT EVER END?More fiction and plagiarism designed to demonise the South, divide the races, fill the coffers of Jessee Jackson and politicians who claim to have the answers, encourage liberal whites to wallow in guilt and shame, insult blacks... with paternalism at its very worst: Treat them like children; they can't handle the truth. To quote STANLEY CROUCH, a black columnist for the New York Daily News; "The book remains an opportunistic insult to black people, and no amount of excuses will change that harsh fact." A must see...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 20, 2002

This mini-series was a landmark production, that not only entertains, but educates the viewer in race relations in the history of the United States. I highly recommend this program for all people, but it is a great way to shape young people's minds,... and help them understand that NO race can be supreme over another. It helped shape my views of minorities in my childhood, and prepared me for my interaction with other races in my adulthood. An excellent all-star cast! Read more Less

Must See story of an American Family

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 10, 2002 | 0 out of 1 found this Roots (1977) review helpful

After 25 years "Roots" remains as wrenchingly power as when it first aired. For the majority of television-watching semiliterate Americans, it wasn't until this mini-series aired that they were exposed to a realistic view of Slavery. "Roots" is in st...ark contrast to the insulting revisionist images of the antebellum south in films such as the drippingly surreal "Gone with the Wind" (i.e., "Birth of a Nation Part 2.") "Roots" forced America to, at least, consider it's abominably bloody origins in murder, rape, and trafficking in human bondage. This film will always be relevant. Read more Less
