Not many albums can boast a lineup of guests that includes Sting, Herbie Hancock, Sheryl Crow, Taj Mahal, and Branford Marsalis. Let alone a debut album by a young upstart no one has ever heard of. But that's just the case with Vinx' Rooms in My Fatha's House, a wonderfully refreshing piece of art filled with memorable melodies, world beat percussion, unusual instrumentation, and the occasional jazz flourishes. From the multi-drum-driven Tell My Feet to the two-voice a cappella of "I'll Give My All to You," you won't hear tunes like these anywhere else. And vocally, Vinx owns these songs, with a unique, interpretive phrasing and melodic presentation that is accessible yet expresses so much more than one voice should. The grab bag of tunes (each one a worthy prize) also includes several not so straightforward love songs, most notably "I Should Have Told Her," "Somehow Did You Know," and "Temporary Love." Accompanied mainly by Hancock's amazingly appropriate and never overwhelming piano,... Vinx offers up the closing track as a touching tribute to his greatest hero and favorite singer, his father.
