    The Rolling Stones-Englands Newest...Trend Setters

    By Andre  May 14, 2006

    Pros: A visceral,bouncy bluesy romp

    Cons: Way too short

In 1964 Brian Jones whole intention for The Rolling Stones was for them to be a pure electric blues band. This is not by any means a rock n' roll album-Chess blues and the Bo Diddly beat play the strongest part in this album. It's made up prima...rily of covers but the pure spunk and energy of "Not Fade Away" and Willie Dixon's classic "I Just Want To Make Love To You" are given fresh, refreshing treatments. The Stone's devotion to urban blues classic such as "Route 66","I'm A King Bee" and "Walking The Dog" is highly admirable as they all get the same treatment. This album is so heavily routed in classic urban blues it only includes one Jaggar/Richards original in "Tell Me",a catchy Spectorian type tune that I imagined was a huge influence on Bruce Springsteen.Because a large majority of the music here is rooted in the first generation of rock n' roll it is one of the Rolling Stone's most influencial recordings and has aged wonderfully over the years. It also spawned the whol British blue rock sound with Clapton and The Yardbirds,Them,John Mayall and Manfred Mann.It also shows how responsible Chicago electric blues was responcible for the British rock of the 60's.A lot of fun and very important in rock history. The British version of the Stones' first album has a nearly identical cover to its American equivalent, issued six weeks later, but a slightly different song lineup. Among these 12 songs, absent is "Not Fade Away," which was a hit single in England (where singles and LPs were usually kept separate), and in its place is the Stones' cover of Bo Diddley's "Mona (I Need You Baby)" (credited here as "I Need You Baby"), which had to wait until Rolling Stones Now, a year later, for its U.S. release. It's not a big switch, a Bo Diddley-style cover of a Buddy Holly song bumping an actual Bo Diddley cover on the U.S. version. Otherwise, the main difference lies in the version of "Tell Me" included here, which sounds about two generations hotter than any edition of the song ever released in the U.S. -- it's the long version, with the break that was cut from the single, but the British LP and the original late-'80s Decca-U.K. compact disc (820 047-2) both contain a version without any fade, runnin...g the better part of a minute longer than the U.S. release of the song, until the band literally stops playing. will hear the difference with SACD, even on a cheap stereo system without a high-end amplifier or speakers. And you won't just hear the difference, you'll be an instant convert and wish, hope and pray that other artists whose catalog hasn't been reissued since the early days of CD -- Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, especially the Beatles -- are given the same treatment in the very near future. SACD and DSD are that good.] - Bruce Eder, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

The Rolling Stones

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the Beatles in the British Invasion, the Stones had pioneered the gritty, hard-driving blues-based rock roll that came to de... Read more
