Pro Reviews: Roller Disco '80s
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews By the end of 2004, it seemed like Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez was on a mission to release enough mix albums to factor in every 12" in his collection. Roller Disco '80s shines a light on postdisco/prehouse dance singles, almost all of which were released early on during the decade of question. The tracks he spins here are mostly midtempo, ideal for roller skating, with spacious arrangements, and bright synthesizer melodies and accents in place of the lush string arrangements you often hear in '70s disco. The mix is choked with classics, including Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat," Nick Straker Band's "A Little Bit of Jazz," the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long," and Young Company's "I Like What You're Doing to Me." Gonzalez, as always, mixes like a pro, but the interjections used to remind you who's behind the decks (a common mark of just about every Gonzalez mix) can be irritating. If you want these tracks in full glory, seek out compilations like Thump's awesome Old School series, Larry Levan's Classic West End Records Remixes, Tommy Boy's fourvolume Perfect Beats, and Leroy Burgess' The Anthology, Vol. 1 and The Anthology, Vol. 2. And that's just for starters. Whether you see this blip on the dancemusic time line as kitschy or pioneering (why not both?), you cannot deny that there's a whole lot of fun to be had. - Andy Kellman, All Music Guide |
