Throw into the musical blender Billy Joel, Elvis Costello, 20 mellow one-hit-wonders from the 70's, and the contents of your local musical instrument store and you might come up with something sounding like Ben Fold. I love his "garage band from heaven" sound. His angelic voice is perfect accompaniment to his thoughtful lyrics - all tied to memorable and brilliant melodies. He has wit and wisdom, childlike wonderment and just enough sarcasm to make it sting. Why he is not at the pinnacle of male pop today is beyond me. He has brought melody back to the foreground in a time when beat boxes and rap rule the airways. That is not to say he cannot use from this melting pot as well. The title track, "Rocking the Suburbs" lunges forward motivated by grunge guitars, a snappy snare and a singular synth riff lead. It is icy, calculated and funny as hell! When he screams, "FFFF*****CKKK!!!&
quot; toward the end it is perfectly acceptable in context of the emotion and lyric. Unfortunately with the necessary inclusion of that one word he effectively eliminated perhaps his most pop, airworthy tune from ever being played. One gets the feeling that Mr. Fold isn't too concerned with that sort of success. His sell-out concerts and waves of adoring fans remind him of his outward acceptance and fame. He must feel inwardly confident in that this CD wins on so many levels. My only concern is that some of the language seems a bit gratuitous. I'm not ready for my 13 year old to listen to all of the tracks. Still, I'd never censor anyone. Please give it a listen; you will not be dissappointed. ...

Pro Reviews: Rockin' the Suburbs
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Superficially, there's not much separating Ben Folds' first official solo album, Rockin' the Suburbs, from his records with Ben Folds Five. It's hard to note any difference, really, since he still works from the same vantage point, borrowing equally from new wave, '90s irony, and a love of classic pop. Still, there is a difference, even if it's hard to pinpoint -- perhaps it's an increased focus, perhaps it was a hot streak from Folds, or perhaps the Five really were more of a group than they seemed and he's benefited by working according to his own patterns. Regardless, Rockin' the Suburbs is as good a record as any he's made, possibly his best. It's still possible to hear his influences -- Joe Jackson still stands out, as do elements of Billy Joel and Todd Rundgren -- but there's no shame there, and he's accepted it as part of his musical personality so much that it sounds like him, even when it sounds familiar. Better still, he's tempered his tendency to be a collegiate wiseass -- it pokes through on the title track, but that's the rare time that it's brought to the forefront -- which helps his songs shine brighter. And while there are no surprises here to anybody familiar with his work, it's a remarkably consistent record, filled with great mid-tempo pop tunes and nicely sentimental ballads. It's simply a good, solid record that captures Ben Folds at his most engaging, and that's more than enough. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |

Pros: All the songs are bittersweet, hopeless romantic, easy to relate to, honest, and magnificent
Cons: Album is Wonderful yet it'd be great if BFF reunited because they are simply the best together
This album was released on the very same day America will never forget 9/11/01. I remember the day I bought this album and everyone at the store was looking at the tv news. This album is filled with many great songs that's goes through many emotions and stories. "Annie Waits" is simply terrific way to start the album and I'd consider everyone to listen to this album from Start to Finish since all the songs are simply wonderful. "Fred Jones Part 2" is such a sad song yet I'm hooked on listening to it. John Mccrea of Cake does an excellent job at being back vocals for that song. the upbeat songs "zak and sara", "gone", "losing lisa", "rockin' the suburbs" are sure to stick in your head through out the day. This album should be played on a road trip since it simply rocks! The saddest yet heartfelt song from this album has to "The Luckiest", Ben's lyrics are so wonderfully put together in a way where you'd love to recite those line to your significant other. He also puts on amazingly memorable live performances which I was lucky to see him at the Hollywood Bowl last summer opening for John Mayer and Rocco Deluca. "Rockin' The Suburbs" is an album that'll surely cheer you up and make you sad in some ways, but all in all this album has everything that makes it such a pure masterpiece! ...
