Pro Reviews: Rock 'n' Roll Etiquette

  • All Music Guide

At this point in their career, reviewing a Guitar Wolf album is not unlike reviewing The Ramones they've firmly established their sonic template, so you have a pretty good idea of what to expect going in. The question, then, is this going to be an album like Brain Drain (great band just walking through their paces) or more like Too Tough To Die (great band proving they've still got the muscle)? Rock 'n' Roll Etiquette thankfully offers fifteen slices of proof that these guitarbattering lunatics from Japan aren't likely to run out of steam anytime soon. This album starts out exploding in a blast of crankedintothered guitars, battered drums, and percolating bass, and pretty much doesn't stop from there on out, even for the relatively slower songs like "The Way I Walk" or "Teardrop Boy". In short, this is primal rock and roll so raw it practically drips blood, and the grainy fuzz of the lowfi audio and the manic halfEnglish/halfJapanese howling only adds to the impact. If you want your e...ars kicked, Guitar Wolf are still the band to call on, and Rock 'n' Roll Etiquette is one highquality portion of gutlevel wail. - Mark Deming, All Music Guide Read more Less

Though the group's first two albums were released only in Japan, imports of the records and word of mouth about Guitar Wolf's incendiary live shows secured U.S. distribution for their next two releases, Wolf Ro... Read more
