Red Prysock, the brother of RB singer Arthur Prysock, may not be as well remembered as King Curtis or Sam "The Man" Taylor, but he, too, was an ace saxophonist who blew his horn to the rock roll beat in the '50s and '60s. Twodozen of his instrumental recordings for the Mercury and Wing labels are collected on this anthology, which concentrates on the jump tunes and rockers that comprised the bulk of his catalog. The selections are strictly instrumental, but bandmembers can be heard to hoot and holler on occasion, "Rock and Roll Party" begins with some spoken dialogue, and "Blow Your Horn" was apparently recorded before a live audience. Although Prysock's album covers often pictured white teenagers, and he recorded tunes with titles like "Teenage Rock" (not included here), his raunchy horn style is pure RB, with frequent vibraphone solos that add a jazzy dimension. Prysock's urgent playing and raw energy make for exciting listening, and this anthology features the best of his best. - G...reg Adams, All Music Guide Read more Less

The brother of vocalist Arthur Prysock, Red Prysock is a hard-driving, energetic tenor saxophonist who has not only backed his brother on several hits for Old Town in the '50s and '60s, but also played with Tiny Bradshaw. Red Prysock also was a popular jukebox artist in the mid-'50s for Mercury, though none of these singles got enough general exposure to become national... Read more
