Pro Reviews: Robert Erickson

  • All Music Guide

The "Ricercar 3" (1967) is a bass solo with an improvised quality played sensitively by Bertram Turetzky. "Sierra" (1984), with text by Erickson and sung here by Philip Larson with The SONOR Ensemble, is a very peculiar recitative with instrumental colors about the California environs interspersed with greetings to friends. Erickson's writing is built from "academic" elements but is always personal, unique and lively.
