    Holdsworth-Road Games Review

    By dairususaf  Oct 10, 2002

One can't merely refer to Allan Holdworth as a great guitarist, or merely fantastic. His musical genius is singular and very powerful to the ears. Holdsworth plays with an unmatched speed and fluidity that is just mind-boggling. Road Games is a stunn...ing collection of great instrumental and vocal jazz fusion style music (although I consider players of this caliber to be in their own genre) and must be heard to be believed. It's amazing to hear the deep emotion and dynamic technique that is so prevalent in the work of Allan Holdsworth. Road Games, like his other works such as Hard Hat Area, is replete with energetic jaw-dropping chops, great guitar-synth work, and tight instrumentation all around. The thing that is most amazing about this recording and others by him, is the range of emotion that comes through with every single note on every solo on every track.Another nice piece of work by a legendary, truly fantastic, peerless musician. Short but sweet: this 24plusminute rerelease of an '80sera solo effort originally appeared as a vinyl EP, and has never before been issued on CD. It is a unique mix of great vocals with a more rocking, bluesy, and jazzy quasimainstream songthemed balladic thrust. This release showcases Allan Holdsworth playing less "out there." Don't misunderstand the guitar is amazing: multivoiced, fusionfired, ethereally chorded, delightfully crystalline clear, noteflourished, and swooningly embellished. Add in the vocals of Jack Bruce for that Cream flashback or the I.O.U. band feel of Paul Williams' crooning, back to back with killer bass by Jeff Berlin and tastefully poised drums by Chad Wackerman, and you have fusionrock bliss.Holdsworth addicts have waited a very long time for this to appear in the CD format. So go for it. It sounds great all over again. The original album cover graphics and notes are included.

Biography

Allan Holdsworth

Guitarist Allan Holdsworth is widely considered to be one of the finest instrumentalists in all of jazz fusion, yet has never truly received the recognition that he so rightfully deserves. Born on August 6, 1946, in Bradford, Yorkshire, Holdsworth was originally taught music by his father, who was a pianist. First a saxophone player, Holdsworth didn't pick up the guitar... Read more
