Pros: Portability
Cons: Battery, support,
I know this is really, really late for a review of an item that was first released almost a decade ago but here goes...First of all, i've had mine since 2002 at least and I still have it. Over the years I have dropped it numerous times and not one crack on my screen. This player is a beast! I have all of my music on it and still has at least 4 gigs left.
.....Now for the cons....Please keep in mind that when I purchased this it was a top of the line player but most of its cutting edge technology is now VERY outdated. The USB port is awkward to say the least and good luck if you lose the cord because there is no third party support. It is very bulky so if your looking for something that slips in your pocket....look elsewhere. There is no color screen(none of them had one in those days). It's playback capabilities are nice but it doesn't have a problem locking up on you. not a big deal here as all you have to do is reset the player. I save the biggest most glaring problem for last.....THE BATTERY LIFE. Having my Rio Riot as long as I have I expected to have battery problems. I use mine EVERY day and now it seems that my battery wont last more than 3-4 hours. I have tried to recalubrate the battery and all it did was screw up my battery tatally now so I cannot use my Rio until I replace the battery. Not a big deal because they are cheap on Ebay but I think its time for me to upgrade to a new player w/ video capabilities and USB 2.0. My player has been the best thing since sliced bread...it will be greatly missed. Now all I need to do is try to yank off all off all of my music from that little HD...wish me luck!
Pros: Huge hardrive and indestructable design
Cons: it's a bit big
I've had this player for something like 4 years now and never had a problem with it. It's great! I have dropped it, stepped on it, taken it to parties, DJ'd weddings... you name it. It's still going strong.
Pros: nothing good about it
Cons: everything
omg this has to be the worst mp3 player ever made, i got one for my brithday and after 2 months i had to send it back becasue it stopped working. i receved the second one a few weeks later. WEEKS! and the second one did not work out of the box, it wouldnt even turn on! what kinda crap is that! i sent that one back and now i have a 3rd one. which by the way i cant even use for more then an hour without it freezing up and dying for a few days. the battries on the 2 that actually worked suck, the battary manager keeps telling em it is empty, i have updated the software to fix the problem and it still doesnt work. It soetimes wount even play the song i seclect. i recomend anything besides a rio, the ppl over there need to really work harder before selling ppl this kinda crap, because that is what the rio riot is, nothing more the crap. o and it is huge! DO NOT BUY! save yourself the hassale, i think i might just bust this thing over a rock.
Pros: Easy Interface
Cons: Too big, bad battery & support,
I have owned this product for 11 months, in that time, I have had it working for about 6 -7 months. It stopped working in May of 2003 (bought it in Feb 03) and hassled with the company over the battery problem that it acknowledges for over a month, finally they told me to send it back. Finally I got a new or reapired one beginning of Sept. Now (Jan 04) I am having THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM! I am currentlt trying to get money back or a different player from the company - butso far am just getting the run around. AVOID this product, spend the extra $ and get the iPod, I wish that I would have.
Seriously this thing is awesome
Who needs a cd player anymore. The best purchase I have ever made.
bought the player after a recomendation by Chuck D in RS mag,
wish he would write me a check for $350. the player is clumsy-too much scrolling. doesn't show artist info, just song title which can be a bitch when playing 'everything'. doesn't spell bands names right, so many artists doubled after multiple downloads. takes forever to create a playlist, adds whatever songs it wants to my playlist, not just what i choose......shoulda got an iPod.
Constant lockups. Flip through a few songs and the indicator tells you that the battery is low - then it locks up! Either reset and recharge, or leave it alone - eventually it resets and then stays on all night. Totally unreliable. Support nonexistent.
I've got over 3000 tracks on my rio riot and it is incredible!
The internal battery sucks!
Ive owned afew portable devices in the past, and I have to say the Rio Riot has the worst battery of any that Ive ever seen.
It starts out being able to play about 8 hours on a single charge, but if you let it charge any more than full, the battery life shortens.
Ive had mine for well over a year, and the battery life is now less than an hour due to accidently leaveing in pluged in too long. Oh, not to mention the power port on the thing is a really odd size, so its impossable to find a car adapter for it.
Other than the battery, it is pretty decent, although Ive seen better.
The Rio Riot is a good choice if you want to carry your whole music library around with you. Price-wise, the Riot is one of the cheapest 20 gigabyte mp3 players I have found. Its main drawback is its size, it is a bit heavier and larger than the other mp3 players in its class, and the usb connection is not the usual 2.0. Other than that, the Riot is great, as it features a FM tuner, as well as the RioDJ, a feature that makes playlists for you based on your input. I would recommend this product to someone who wants a lot of memory for their money.
its the best thing i have ever bought
My friend showed this to me and I just love it I can take my entire collection with me everywhere! From big to small it goes everhwere you go...as long as you remember to take it with you when you leave!
This player has NO support for MAC. Although they claim it works for Macintoshes, they send you a PC ONLY CD. The Website doesnt provide the software needed to work in OS9. They swear to me that if i buy OSX it will work. Bah Their tech support is not a toll-free number, and the people have still not been able to provide be with anything that works. Its pretty to look at though...
THis Mp3 player is bad. It skips tracks and doesnt download correctly. oh well at least thats my opinion.
This is the first time a ever seen a player that would be 20GB
I have used one of these on a long motorcycle ride and after 7,000 miles of riding I never listed to the same song. very nice toy
I was an early buyer and paid $350! It never worked right and was sent back once for repair (stayed the same). Terrible support from Sonic Blue who should be shot. They dont advertise it any more! Pity us suckers
This piece of junk is the biggest crock of
Purchased a Rio player and it started to malfunction. It is still in warrenty, I tried every way to have Rio fix it. I tried to get a return authorization. They do not respond via web site, email or phone. It is still broken and useless waste of money. I will never buy a Rio again.
This thing sux. I got a total dud when I got mine and recieved another one and it wouldnt transfer songs. Finally we got an Archos Jukebox 15GB and even though its 5GB less it is a great player.
RIO SUCKS!
I have had nothing but trouble with my rio riot. After 6 weeks (just past the 30 days where I could return it to the purchase place), it just stopped working. Wouldnt even turn on or do anything. I complained to the manufacturer and they sent me a replacement - so I took the hours of time to put another 5 gigs of music back on it, and guess what happened two months later? It completely stopped working again - totally unresponsive. Im now in the process of contacting the manufacturer again, but I would give anything to go back in time and spend my $300 on something else. I never did anything remotely damaging to my player and the situation is ridiculous.
