Ringo Rama Knocked Me Out!

Admittedly I'm a Ringo fan. I play drums because of one fateful Sunday evening in 1964. Having said that let me tell you about this Album er CD called Ringo Rama and SURPRISE DVD included in the CD packaging! Just like the last two studio albums ...both Ringo and Mark Hudson creatively produced the music. The wonderful Christmas disc released a couple of years ago was a major hint at what was to come. Rama has 14 songs lots of high energy Rock, old style rock & roll and a few ballads. The songs are both well crafted and clever. There's Country, Jazz, Rock, The Beatles and Pink Floyd, all rolled up into a pleasing music injected with Ringo's ever-fun personality. The wonderful drum groove that often drove the Beatles music is very evident here. There's an incredible list of players and writers: Clapton, David Gilmour, Herb Pederson, Charlie Haden, Van Dyke Parks, Gary Burr, Timothy B. Schmidt, Shawn Colvin, even Willie makes an appearance. Ringo's regular band, the roundheads led by Mark Hudson are impressive. There are thirteen songs listed with a fourteenth tacked on the end where the Ringmeister plays all the instruments. "Eye to Eye" is a message song about getting along with your neighbors. It is timely right now. There's "Missouri Loves Company", a lighthearted love song with Country overtones. I was immediately knocked out by "Instant Amnesia" (no pun intended). It is both sonically powerful, and held together with a great groove and some of Ringo's best and AGGRESSIVE drumming in years. It features a jazz breakdown with great upright bass played by the brilliant Charlie Hayden, capped off with a trick ending which DJs would love if they would only throw away their play lists and spin this record. There's a song about Queen Elizabeth called "Elizabeth Reigns", taken from the initials "ER" which I guess was seen on signs at the recent Queen's Celebration bash. Another tune, "Never Without You" is a beautiful tribute to old chum and musical partner George Harrison. For me there are 5 standout cuts and the other 9 are quite pleasing. Im now on my third or fourth spin of the CD and its more like 10 stand out cuts. For drummers and docu-fans, the DVD is the treat. It's a documentary on Ringo and company working on the CD. Neato Keen as we used to say. Ringo makes you feel like a long awaited guest at his home and studio. I got a thrill watching Ringo playing these FAST explosive triplets and paradiddles from snare to toms and back again. Did I say the CD is filled with plenty of tasty grooves and impressive fills? As far as I can tell this is the first Ringo album/cd in a long time where he is THE ONLY drummer and percussionist. As much as I like Jim Keltner, it's clear Ringo doesn't need him here. His technique is fun to watch, and he is as lovable as ever. I've watched quite a few documentaries about how a record was made, this one was fun! You'll dig the record too!
