    James Brown in his prime!

    By Rip  Jun 8, 2001

The single greatest benefit derived from the invention of the compact disc is that it has rescued material that had been previously unavailable. Such was the case with "Revolution of the Mind".IMHO, this album successfully captures the raw energy and... excitement one would experience from attending a James Brown concert, when JB was in his prime. Recorded with pristine clarity, JB and the band SMOKE from start to finish! THIS IS ONE FUNKY ALBUM! I challenge ANYONE to sit still when James turn up the heat on this platter. The only thing missing is actually being able to see James perform. One can only imagine the antics onstage while listening to the audience (women mostly) scream. Never mind that, though. This CD defines why James Brown was (is) called the "Hardest Working Man In Show Business." Those familiar with the James Brown story are well aware of how strict a task master he was regarding band performances. Well, to this novice ear, THIS bad is TIGHT. After whetting our appetites with a few hits and a couple ballads, JB launches from a "Fast Medley" into over 20 minutes of non-stop funk. Soul train, indeed! What else can I say? You ain't HEARD James Brown Live! until you've heard this classic. This is a "must have" for any CD collection.Now...'scuse me while I groove...! Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Subtitled "Recorded Live at the Apollo, Vol. III," Revolution of the Mind presents a 1971 James Brown concert performance, which means the set list is given over largely to the singles Brown had released over the previous couple of years, including "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose," "Super Bad," and "Make It Funky," all of them groove tunes with chanted slogans for lyrics, plus a medley of slightly less recent hits and the occasional real oldie, such as "Try Me." Brown concentrates on communicating with his audience, generating female screams, for example, when he comes out against dieting "'cause the more you got, the more I want." On the one hand, this can be considered indulgent -- Brown spends the nearly 13 minutes of "Make It Funky" introducing the band by asking each member where he's from -- on the other hand, the aural evidence suggests it went over better in the theater than it does in your living room. That wasn't true of the first Live at the Apollo, though. Biography

James Brown/The JB's

"Soul Brother Number One," "the Godfather of Soul," "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Mr. Dynamite" those are mighty titles, but no one can question that James Brown has earned them more than any other performer. Other singers were more popular, others were equally skilled, but few other AfricanAmerican musicians have been so influential on the course of pop... Read more
