The most experimental Ark., yet.
, October 8, 1999Reviewer: dukewallymondo_mark2 - See all dukewallymondo_mark2's reviewsIf you've been following along faithfully with the C.D. releases of this creative wizard, then you know this album is the final chapter in his "Stardancer Trilogy". It is also the most distant from the content of the story in the liner notes of all three discs. Whereas "Quest" directly linked itself to the story with lyrics that refered to the main character and places and things like "The Stone of Truth", and "Wind" was crafted as a soundtrack to Dave's own story- this collection of music could just as well been a stand-alone piece and no one would have been like, "Hey, this could be part three of that series David is doing!". I think Dave wanted to experiment and expand musically and in so doing totally disregarded the text. Hey, we fans do the same thing...we let his music carry us and create our own stories. His catalog of instrumentals and sound effects has expanded greatly, all kinds of talent join him on this journey (Sid Page's violin-craft is phenominal), and, in case you didn't know it, there's a Church of Scientology Chior out there, somewhere, and they check in, too. Not all of The D.Ark.One's experimenting is successful, in my opinion, but the one's that succeed do so on a level of sheer brilliance. Tracks 1, 4, 8, 9, and 10 prove his musical genius w/o a doubt (especially track 9, Water of Life---WOW). So, if you're trying to buy the absolute best stuff to start out your New Age collection with, and you don't have Arkenstone's Trilogy, yet...You haven't started your collection. Pro Reviews: Return of the Guardians
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews David Arkenstone's third album Return of the Guardians completes a trilogy begun with In the Wake of the Wind and it is the most detailed and elaborate entry yet. Occasionally working with a full choir, Arkenstone has created a detailed and fantastical sonic landscape that effortlessly evokes the science fiction story he is telling. - Rodney Batdorf, All Music Guide |
