good followup to the dismal Adrenalize

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 18, 2002

I was surprised that the Lep's released an album so soon after 'Adrenalize.' But it was a good move because the over pop, bubblegum of 'Adrenalize' was not what I would call the Lep's best release:)Taken from B sides from studio songs that didn't mak...e albums(most are from the Hysteria sessions), this is a great album and has the Lep's cranking out rockers reminiscent of 'Pyromania.'The album opens with the dark rocker 'Desert Song', followed and dubbed in very nicely for effect: 'Fractured Love.' Both B sides from the Hysteria sessions and you can tell the quality of songs being written back then by this band. Both are standouts. Other highlights would be 'Ring of Fire', 'Ride into the Sun'(version #3 for those counting), and 'Miss You in a Heartbeat.' This song was a big hit in Canada(where I'm from), they even thanked Canada on the greatest hits album. There are actually three versions of the latter track on this album.Overall, while not over produced like their earlier work, 'Retroactive' shows that Def Leppard still like to write hard rock songs. Also of note, Steve Clark actually plays on most of the cuts which was a very nice gesture from the band, showing how they still miss him. Read more Less

Great album, sure not as excellent as hysteria, but another great album from Def Leppard. Nice songs like she's so tough and the electric version of Miss you in a heartbeat.

This is not as good as "Pyromania", "Hysteria", and "Adrenalize", the only other Def Leppard albums I've got so far. But! It still is good. I love just about every song on here, especiall "Fractured Love", "Action", "Two Steps Behind", and "Ring o...f Fire". Read more Less

Vintage Def Leppard I love it

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 5, 2000

    With songs like
She's too tough, Ride into the sun,
Ring of fire (My fav. on this record),
I wanna be your hero, plus the heart stopping ballads you can't ask for no more.
Oh, anouther thing is most these songs are B-sides but still headlining songs.

The B-sides are just as good!

I have to say that Desert Song is one of my all-time favourite Leppard songs. And it kicks off Retro-Active perfectly, with huge style and swagger. After that, there are still tons of great rock songs here: Fractured Love, Ring of Fire, Ride Into th...e Sun, I Wanna Be Your Hero, Only After Dark and Action (though the last two are covers). When the rocking is over, there are still the ballads to consider. Personally, I love Miss You In A Heartbeat, but three versions (check the hidden track!) is probably a tad too many. Then, of course, there are the acoustic songs of From The Inside and Two Steps Behind. Brilliant stuff, except that I prefer the version of Two Steps.. on the Make Love Like A Man CD single, which doesn't have strings. The only song I skip is She's Too Tough with its cheesy lyrics and music. This album goes to show that there is more to Def Leppard than just album tracks!!? Read more Less

All the best you've never heard...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 27, 1999

This is mostly a compilation of B-sides and discarded songs from the "Hysteria" album. The tunes stand well on their own, and in my opinion, better than the couple of throw away dittys on the aforementioned LP. My only real disappointment with this ...CD was that the original versions of the B-sides featured Steve Clark on guitar, and his work was edited out and re-done for this. I love Phil Collen, but his re-work on the songs lacks Steve's original punch. Other than that, no whining from me on this one. An enjoyable and "different" set from Sheffield's favorite sons.
