    an album about revolution

    By Jon  Aug 1, 2003

This album is about social, political and musical revolution. In a world full of over-produced pop, Rx Bandits dare to do what few are doing today, make good music. This album has a genuine sense of inspiration that is lacking in today's scene.... Lead singer/songwriter Matt Embree is fed up with a superficial and apathetic American culture, and wants to force feed you the Red Pill. The picture he paints although critical is not full of dispair, regret, negativity or hopelessness like that of the emo or nu metal scene. Its an album that has hope for the a better future, a message (that in itself is something a lot of today's music lacks) of hope.Although its hard to classify the sound on this album, there is the distinctive prog-reggae sound that was hinted at on the Rx Bandits' previous (and just as good, if not arguably better) release Progress that sets the Rx Bandits in a league of their own. Musically this album is a logical progression from the last. Taking its best elements and trying to see how far it can take them. There are a few experiments and the the band is not afraid to jam (this makes for one hell of a live show! if you ever get the chance see these guys live! one of the best shows i've ever seen). Every song is well written and unpredictable. Embree and second guitarist/Keyboardist Steve Choi, have some amazing musical harmonies. This album restored my faith in new music. Its a must have! The Resignation, the third LP from Calibased combo Rx Bandits, finds the group eschewing the third wave ska influences of its early work in favor of an emphasis on volatile punkpop and purified reggae riddims. The album is ambitious in more ways than music it arrives in a gorgeous fullcolor package, decked out with arresting cover art that wouldn't be out of place on a Tool or Marilyn Manson album. Additionally, The Resignation's audio quotient is fleshed out with a DVD featuring live footage and the usual behindthescenes rigor morale. Obviously, Rx Bandits have been "upstreamed" to MCA/Universal via DriveThru's deal with the behemoth the same deal that's fueled the boffo success of such freshfaced punkpoppers as A New Found Glory and Starting Line. There's a chance that the profithungry parent label has had a hand in refining Rx Bandits' sound as well, since the hardhitting fury of "Sell You Beautiful" and "Mastering the List" as well as the 311esque grooves of "Paltreaux" and "Fal...ling Down the Mountain" are much more marketable than the relatively straightforward skacore of 1999's Halfway Between Here There. Whatever the cause of the Bandits' molting process, the result is formidable. Matthew Embree's throaty vocals and ambitious songwriting are even more mature here, and the rawk side of the band has never sounded thicker. At the same time, the group has discovered how to work in its talented horn section (tenor sax and trombone) in a way that's more rock with horns than ska with rock. It's not necessarily a revelation it's just that Rx does it so well, you start to think it is. The Resignation is not without its flaws. Rx Bandits are still young, after all, and tend to lose the end of the album's thematic string. While Embree's consciousnessraising streak is admirable, he gets a bit heavyhanded during the island groove of "Overcome (The Recapitulation)," where lines like "We've had enough of these politicians' wars/What we need right now is LOVE" make him sound like a highschool kid who discovered Bob Marley and CSNY's "Ohio" in the same weekend. Fortunately, his antiwar sloganeering works better in the acerbic "Newstand Rock (The Bottom Line Exposition)," and "Taking Chase as the Serpent Slithers" should at least turn some kids out there on to the genius of the Police. - Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

RX Bandits

Liberating power tunes with inspiration coming from as different background styles as furious rock or untamed punk, Rx Bandits also flow along with the nouvelle punk/pop stream, although distinctly providing ska's stimulating melodies, moved by the works of bands like Reel Big Fish. Forming in the late '90s in Seal Beach, CA, the crew first counted on a four-piece team ... Read more
