Pros: -Whoa-geez graphics and animation, The refinement of a classic, Most camera angles work,Controls easy to get a handle on, Some replayability
Cons: Save points few and far between, Lots of backtracking if youre not careful, Impossible to see some items
Resident Evil (RE) was originally released way back in 1996 and since then has remained the king of the survival horror genre. If it was the king before, its the undisputed Ruler of the Universe now (at least, as of this writing).
Playing as either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, two members of a S.T.A.R.s Alpha team sent to investigate the disappearance of Bravo team, you explore a massive mansion on the outskirts of Racoon City (population: 12,000 and dropping like a rock) to uncover the origin of the zombies stalking the area. The haunted house setting never gets old when its done correctly, and RE manages this with great deftness.
Cinematic camera angles can often times be a pain in the ass. RE manages to avoid awkward camera work for the most part, although there are still a few instances of being given a poor view of an area allowing zombies to get the drop on you even though they should be in plain sight. But not once did I get turned around or lost because I couldnt get a bearing on where I was. The graphics and animation are so good its like playing a super-extended cutscene. The play of shadows and light makes for some incredibly gorgeous and convincing environments. Even the most innocuous scene is made anxiety inducing with the placement of a flickering light. A shiver down the spine is common while playing. (Sound design matches the action on screen even the voice acting manages to be above average!) Of course, settings are nice but zombies are nicer. All the icky undead and mutated monstrosities are suitably horrific -- RE's rated M for good reason.
But graphics are nothing without gameplay. And gameplay there is. RE plays like an adventure game, giving you plenty of tasks to perform to make progress. As I mentioned above, the house is huge so there are puzzles plastered throughout so sometimes finding an item can take a long time. (But if youre careful and take things easy, it solves the problem of backtracking.)
One problem with this aspect is that some items of interest are impossible to spot due to a lack of on-screen cues. Really important objects tend to glint to attract your attention but other items (like the shotgun shells in the cemetery) I found completely by accident. This tends to lead to pressing A to investigate everything you come across no matter how insignificant (or pressing it at random.) Some items are guarded by puzzles that are straightforward for the most part, but others can result in instant death and some frustration.
Pros: Good Story, and Better Voice Acting
Cons: The Camera Angles May Annoy Some People
Graphics- Incredible. I didn't even think games that look this great were even possible in 2002. Everything looks realistic and almost everything moves. Backgrounds are pre-rendered, but you can see the grass move and lightning occassionally strikes.
Control- People say that the controls are horrible. Partially true. I suggest you use Control Type C. It's much easier to use. You lightly press the R button to walk and you press it hard to run. You use the L Button to have your weapon up. The Control Type C saves this game from getting a bad review in this category.
Story- Right before you play the game, you can choose to be either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. Jill can carry up to 8 items, which is handy plus she has a lockpick to open doors with simple locks. Chris can only carry 6 things and doesn't have the lockpick and instead must find small keys. Also Jill gets a Grenade Launcher Chris can never get and Jill gets an upgraded Shotgun that Chris can only get about half-way through the game. I suggest you first play as Jill then as Chris.
Sound- Beautiful music, horrific and terrifying. Sometimes there is no music, but the groans of the zombies make sure that you always feel afraid. Tons of noises for footsteps and bosses and enemies have their unique sounds.
Replayibility- A lot. You can play as one character then beat the game again with the other, unlock 4 costumes (2 for each character), more modes, difficulty levels, and 2 unlockable weapons.
Pros: Scary and atmospheric!
Cons: not so much replay value (too linear)

Two Discs: Unlike the original Resident Evil, the GameCube version is so advanced that it requires two roms in order to fit the entire game.
Resident Evil 1 or RE-make as it is also known' is such a beauty of a game that any fan of the genre will love it.
Shinji Mikami, the father of the RE numerical series, produced his ultimate vision of the first chapter exclusively for GameCube. He wanted to bring the fear factor back to the saga and since he was the director of RE-make, he accomplished his goal pretty well.
If you think the remake for GC is just the same game with pretty graphics, well you be wrong my friend. RE-make has a lot of exclusive content (the new Crimsom Zombies, for one thing) and details concerning the history of the numerical series (The whole Lisa Trevor storyline). Plus you can pick up extra defense weapons to help you in the adventure.
Besides, the voice acting and the intro FMV is waaaay beyond the corny-cheesy stuff you saw in the original PSX versions. The plot is still campy, though.
This game is a must buy and if you're going to play Resident Evil Zero, I recommend you play RE-make first 'cos plotwise it is a lot better to do just that.
The game has nice extras like the usual but NEW costumes for the main characters plus a gallery of pre-production art and a special letter to the gamer from Shinji Mikami himself!!!!
But the best feature is that like I stated before, Shinji was able to bring back the fear to the series with this game. It's a scary and tense game. And that's something that in my opinion, is even better than just pretty visuals.
Graphics: Excellent! There is so much details in the character models. The pre-rendered backgrounds aren't static (photo-like) but are actually animated so that they look alive. Candles flicker, objects have shadows and there are reflections in windows and the wind makes the trees and grass move. The creatures have been re-vamped for this version. They look amazing. The cutscenes were made using a top japanese cinematographer, and the results are incredible. Very cinema-like.
Audio: The sounds of this game help create the illusion of real "life". The sounds your character makes walking on different surfaces or the sounds of the wind, only add to the effect of being in a real place. Some sounds like those of the fly-men (chimeras), are pretty disgusting. Especially after you kill them. They turn into a pile of maggots or something. Yuck!
Music: The music is a mixture of old tunes (from the original) and brand new tunes. For the most part, Shinji Mikami decided to keep the music to a minimum as to create more suspence in the gamer/user.
Replay value: The game has at least 12 endings and stuff to unlock like different game modes and difficulty levels to play in.
Control: The same old controls are here again. But on the GC control you don't exactly feel like driving a tank when controling your character. Not at all. There are three control sets to choose from. I stayed with the default setting, it just worked for me. And since I've been playing games for ages, the whole control thing never was an issue for me.
Overall, this is an excellent game and since this game is totally compatible with Nintendo's new game console (Wii), it will probably have a longer shelf life than most GC games. Mainly due to it's high grade quality.
When most people think of Super Smash Bros. Melee when they think of GameCube, Resident Evil or REmake, is proof that the purple cube has a lot of great games under it's belt.
Pros: AMAZING AS HELL
Cons: AMAZING AS HELL(Idk the differences b/t pros and cons, lol)
Idk where to start, this game is so kick ass.My favorite RE Game was always RE3 nemesis, but this,THIS,omfg!! THIS IS AMAZING.The graphics, storyline, monste
rs,characters, guns, and just everything. The ONLY thing I missed was the homer simpson zombie sounds.=( BUT the zombie sounds were still good.I LOVED the crimson heads. For fun,I had the Samuri Edge(beat the game on normal under 5 hrs) and the shotgun, and I let EVERY Zombie I killed turn into one,and just ran around fighting them.It was sooooooooooo fun.One zombie that I killed had its leg broke,so,when the crimson head chased me,it limped and it was sooo funny. This game is just amazing.I reccommend every RE Gamer to buy it.And every-non RE gamer to buy it also,b/c its just so great.Oh,and I agree with the Pantera person,RE Zero blows. The leech monsters were retarted. The Scorpion and the Bat were just like big stuffed animals. The hunting gun had no point whatsoever, and their vests, looked like plastic. The game to me sucked.L8r,my screen name is Mmxzt14.My name is Tyler,l8r peepole.Lol
Pros: The graphics are so stunning you forget its a game!!!
Cons: The controles are a little annoying and the riddles are kind of annoying...
Resident Evil is perhaps one of the most horric yet entertaining games of the decade...
It starts out with a highly captifating intro movie and quickly you begin to live the nightmare. It takes place in Raccoon City(To those who don't know it is in Colorado) where the Multi-Billion dollar organization Umbrella Inc. has been conducting research on viral warfare. The T-Virus is a new virus that revives dead organisms(Zombies) and the setting is full of them. The dark shadows and erie moans intensify the suspensfulness of the game.
If your looking for a good thrill and a scary, challanging, and entertianing game with a solid plot, look no more.
This game is the only reason I spent 200 on the Gaycube. Quite frankly, I could not (and to this day can not) believe the graphics in this thing. I could not believe the gamecube was capable of a game like this (I mean, it is SO small). Thankfully this is not a straight port of the survival horror classic we all know and love, but a "rebirth" of it and it works, nay, excells in every level. Thankfully, they got rid of the horrible, horrible intro in the first edition (all the actors completely sucked, and the fake plastic dog fooled no one). If you have a Gamecube and don't have this game you must be a tree hugging hippy only in on it for crap like Luigi's mansion or even Mario Sunshine (which I own,.... but hey, it IS mario). Oh yeah, as a public service I am telling you to STAY AWAY from ZERO, that game is complete ass, play this or Code Veronica instead.
The game is really great. The only thing that needs to be fixed are the controls. I know that they are a trademark and everything but they suck. oh well...
Thisis a game of action survival horror. to me this game has the best story line i have heard of. i will recommend this game for people who like horror. this game has a lot of puzzles and its tough too!
i think the howl resi series is wicked its scaryi think it has a good storyline hope capcom make more like it..... Marie.
i have been a resident evil game fan since the original back in 1996 and i think this remake really will make old gamers fall in love all over again with the series and new gamers discover what makes us resident evil fans tick.
i happen to like this game, but the problem is that it is one of those games, where you solve puzzles and stuff. cmon people, im not good at, like, thinking stuff!
I was amazed when i bought resident evil. The graphics are so much in detail and the gameplay has that atmosphere that makes the hair in your arms lift straight up!! oh yeah and alot of people ask me....is it that scary??? well all i can say is it dont matter how old you are this game scares anyone, if your up for a fear challenge play this game on surround sound, lights of the hole house off,and make sure ur by urself........beleive me the game is better played that way!!! its worth the experience!!
Ps2 fans cried out loud when Resident Evil became exclusive to the GameCube. Now Capcom, instead a making a brand new game, released a remake of the first time we got scared.
-Graphics: WOW, uses the GameCubes full power.
-Sound: CRISP and SCARY, the music will build up to suspence that will make you poop your pants.
-Control: A little flawed, but after a while you get used to it.
Fun (Scare) Factor: HIGH, this game will make you scream like the first time RE did on Ps1.
-Overall: The true remake, this game is a must own for GameCube owners and Resident Evil fans.
Before buy this title only i played with silent hill 2 and i thinking that no someone else title of survival horror raise on my the fun of terror, but Resident Evil has the necesary to get you into shock, if you enjoy this clase of emotions you must buy this title.
good die
The first Resident Evil game on the GC pretty much tops all games on the GC. With some minor flaws, it might have killed its performance.
One of the biggest flaws is it's controls. It can be very hard to actually conquer the controls because of the GC's wannabe comfortable controller.
Even if the controls are very bad, the fun will never stop. This game is very very very fun to play, and when u beat the game, u just wanna keep playin it till u die. If there is one game u wanna get for the GC, get Resident Evil.
RE has great graphics although they lack 3 dimension in some places, sound is a major part of gameplay letting you know when zombies are coming. Control is classic RE a pain in the ass sometimes but you get use to it. and the oppertunity for 11 diffrent endings gives it great replay value. The puzzels are sometimes very difficult to solve making it a challange for us smart folks. Overall great, cant wait for RE0!
