Cons: What cons?
I have had this soundtrack for almost 8 years...and I have to buy a new one because I wore it out! The first time I saw rent, I fell in love with the show....after hearing the music, you understand the story more. The entre show, including the scenes removed in the movie, are here. The quality is great and the youth in Anthony Rapp, Taye Diggs, and cast's voices are fun to listen to. The final track with Stevie Wonder is true fun with the harmonica over the words and music of the late Jonathan Larson. This should go Diamond someday!!! ...

Pro Reviews: Rent [Original Broadway Cast]
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews An optimistic modernization of Puccini's opera +La Bohème, Jonathan Larson's +Rent was revered by the theatre community as the revitalizing hope for the Great White Way. While the musical itself is highly acclaimed and lauded, having acquired numerous Tonys and Obies, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for drama, the Dreamworks recording lacks much of what makes the live performances so endearing. The music, an eclectic jumble of pop ballads, gospel, dance, and anthems, holds up well through repeated listens. The lyrics, however, when placed under close scrutiny, rely far too much on clichés, and they have a noticeable sense of incompletion. This could stem from the fact that Jonathan Larson died tragically the evening before the first off-Broadway performance. Mostly, though, what is noticeably missing is the spark of energy provided by the interaction between an exuberant cast and an adoring audience. Still, many of the songs are infectious, and the musical as a whole is very uplifting and hopeful. Particularly noticeable moments in the soundtrack are the songs "Take Me or Leave Me," a powerful duet between the two lesbian lovers (one of the many '90s updates) and "One Song Glory," a solo rock ballad sung by Adam Pascal as the lead character Roger, most likely the strongest song on its own taken out of the context of the play. Rent is also the musical that contains the song "Seasons of Love," which is quickly becoming a standard. - Sarah Erlewine, All Music Guide |

Pros: Beautiful Music Scores, Fascinating Characters
Cons: None that I can think of.
Rent was recommended to me by a friend awhile back. I had always thought of the musical as a little bizarre, considering the interesting set of characters. (A man on drag, a prostitute on smack, a bisexual woman, a lesbian, 3 people with AIDS, an ex-druggie songwriter with a temper, and a normal guy.) However, before long, my curiosity took over and I had to see it.
The movie was an incredible piece of art. Every scene was completely realistic and down-to-earth. The setting of hardcore NY fascinated me. I was delighted. This movie moved me beyond belief. When it was over, I just sat there, and tears ran down my face.
I laughed (a lot), I cried (even more), and I yelled at my television screen (even more). I would certainly recommend this movie to anyone, especially those, like me, interested in musicals. ...
