    Renaissance: Revelation

Yeah, the guy's right about the track listing; I don't think there are three cd's. And you gotta give Danny Howells his credit too. Anyway, this album is HOT. It's been in my cd player, mp3 player, and my md player ever since I got it. Every sing...le track on this compilation is worth listening to, but my absolute favorites are "Rapture" and "Stealth." Be prepared to have this album playing in your stereo, portable, and in your mind for a long time.---CrAzYwOlFeYeS Read more Less

1.) danny howells and nick warren did renaissance revelation2.) the tracklisting here is incorrect (as of today, at least. try looking for a good dj site for the tracklisting; its space-wasting to write it down here.) it's a double-edged sword when y...ou have 2 dj's on a progressive mix 2cd set. where usually, an artist picks up on d2 where he left off on d1, there is no cohesion between howell's and warren's mixes. the counterargument to that, though, is that you get independently brilliant mixes from 2 great djs to appease the listeners of this set. howells' set is just a bit more tribal, and isn't so progressive, as his beats are strong from the start, while warren makes a steady buildup until track 7, 'dirty', where the mix starts to REALLY kick in. while that seems weird, to have it kick in so late, i'll let you know that the first 6 songs are relatively short, so don't worry, he kicks in at the right time. what's also great is that the djs weren't left to 'extend' songs just to make a 2cd set. warren and howells squeeze in substantial information with what time they had, and come up with strong output. almost all the songs are brand new, quality stuff from predominantly non-ubiquitious acts. that's great for those who are getting tired of remixes of delerium songs on almost every mix cd of the last 6 months. no 'fence to those who had 'em, but it was everywhere. i would, however, suggest, that if you want to listen to both cds in succession, start with the nick warren disc. i think it would make for a better feel. another must-buy from the renaissance masters series. great show. Pro Reviews: Renaissance: Revelation

  • All Music Guide

Nick Warren and Danny Howells -- both previously featured in the Global Underground series -- each mix a disc on this entry into the similar Renaissance series. And, as you might presume, these mixes are indeed awfully similar to these DJs' previous Global Underground efforts -- nothing but the latest batch of progressive house tracks. Both sets are dark and ominous, only the occasional female vocal shedding any light on these monolithic mixes. In other words, Renaissance: Revelation is the sound of progressive house circa 2001. It's that simple. The genre had become more progressive, more epic, and more inaccessible as the late '90s became the early 2000s -- what was once melodic and energetic trance had become foreboding and ethereal progressive house. That's what you get here -- the remnants of trance, filtered through a sparse house foundation. Occasional tracks like Ashley Beedle's Mahavishnu Vocal Mix of Bent's "Always" and Deep Dish's remix of iio's "Rapture" are uplifting momen...ts, but for the most part, they are just brief shimmers of light in otherwise dreary and disorienting sets by Warren and Howells. Very much following the precedent set by other popular stateside 2001 mixes like John Digweed's Global Underground: Los Angeles, this album sounds like the stoned hangover of the ecstatic, blissed-out, glowsticky late-'90s trance explosion -- the melancholic aftermath of that hedonistic excess. Sometimes it feels good to come down, and this is one of those instances, particularly in the case of Nick Warren's mix, which leaves you feeling numb by its conclusion. - Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Nick Warren

Nick Warren became one of the first so-called "superstar DJs" in the mid- to late '90s, holding down a high-profile residency at -Cream in England, touring around the world, and appearing on several DJ mix albums before they became commonplace. Though he spun an eclectic array of dance styles in the late '80s and early '90s, he eventually championed the late-'90s trance... Read more
