    So Close To Home!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 25, 2003 | 2 out of 2 found this Real Women Have Curves (2002) review helpful

This is one of the best films ever made of a Mexican family showing true cultural beliefs and values and a young girl's desire to accept who she is and what she can become. The script so close to home, you can't stop the laughter of seeing right thro...ugh. Read more Less

    Cliched and nonsensical

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 22, 2008

    Pros: None

Cons: To many to list here

This movie was a barrage of cliches and half-truths. The protagonist wants to go to college and is nervous about getting in, even though senior year is already over (this all would have been decided months earlier). Her mama doesn't want her to g...o to school at all, probably making her one the only immigrant in the history of the country that moved to this country to ensure her children couldn't take advantage of its opportunities. The whole body image issue is presented as a feel-good, Oprahesque sub-plot. Read more Less

    A "real" movie

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 10, 2004

Pros: Movie was about real life situations

Cons: Acting was a bit bland at times

This movie begins with Ana (America Ferrera), a high school senior who is about to graduate. All of her classmates are going to college and her teacher (George Lopez) strongly encourages Ana to attend college also. However, her family has set differe...nt goals for Ana’s life. Her mother, Carmen (Lupe Ontiveros) feels that a woman’s role in life is to be beautiful (Carmen often criticizes Ana about her weight), work hard, have children and take care of her husband. This is what Carmen has done in here life and she expects Ana to do the same. So Ana faces a dilemma many young women face: will she follow her desire to go to college and a presumably bright future or will she stay home and help support her family? I liked this movie for a couple of reasons: First of all, it was “real”. It deals with real issues that real people face (the decision of going to college, problems with weight, conflicts with parents). Secondly, this film shows critiques stereotypes about women. In my opinion, Carmen represents the stereotypical of what a women should do in life (stay at home, raise the family, take care of the kids). Ana represents what women have become: strong, educated, and independent. Also, the film represents intersections of race, social & economic class, and gender. Throughout the movie, we see a Latino family struggling to get above the stereotypes. In the movie, we even see Ana and her sister Estella looked down upon by another Hispanic-American woman, due to social class. Read more Less

The actors in the movie are real. Their roles are not overdone. And I like the fact that the movie does not end in a happy ending. True to life.
