Composed of former members of New York no wave groups like 8 Eyed Spy and James Chance and the Contortions, the Raybeats actually bore only a passing resemblance to those outfits, instead choosing to play simple, retro guitar instrumentals that recalled Duane Eddy and the Ventures. The group's nucleus consisted of guitarist Jody Harris, Pat Irwin, and Don Christensen, with a revolving-door line of bassists throughout their brief history.
