It was very sad that Siouxsie had broken up with the group, considering this was the best record the band has ever done.It still has the dark, moody, melancholy sounds you've heard from in the late 80's/early 90's. Only this time they've taken it fu...ll circle. The first track, 'O Baby', explains just that. 'Fall From Grace' is enough to sound like a Doors song, and the tinge of country and accordion on 'The Lonely One' shows the band's diverse talent. The best track on this album is 'Forever', as its euphoric sense entrances you. Also, the 10-minute title song, which is cut into a medley-like tune, should please the listener. A crying, shrieking guitar can be heard on 'The Double Life'. And the final song closed off the disc perfectly. Also, if you can't get enough of Siouxsie Sioux, she is also on various Creatures albums with the drummer Budgie, dating back to 1983. Check out the Creatures latest E.P., 'U.S. Retrace'. An ironic title, considering that this would be their last album, which is sad. Sad because the Banshees, one of the survivors of the English punk scene, went out with a whisper instead of roaring howl like they should have. Half of The Rapture is produced by Velvet Underground alumnus and art rock pioneer John Cale, while Siouxsie and her Banshees take control of the other half. Cale should have been nowhere near this album. While the Banshees-produced tracks sound like their vintage stuff, the Cale tracks stretch the Banshees' sound too thin. Siouxsie and the Banshees were at their best when they were doing things their way, and The Rapture is living proof that the Banshees succeeded because they never tried to fit into conventional musical structures. An ill-fitting goodbye.

Biography

Siouxsie and the Banshees

Siouxsie the Banshees were among the longest-lived and most successful acts to emerge from the London punk community; over the course of a career which lasted two decades, they evolved from an abrasive, primitive art-punk band into a stylish, sophisticated unit which even notched a left-field Top 40 hit. Throughout their numerous lineup changes and textural shifts, the... Read more
