Oh man, oh man

NOBODY comes out after eight years and gets harder on their fifth album. NOBODY! Unless their name is Rancid... Awesome, old school, whatever you want to call it, this is a good CD, although it won't agree with some fans. If you liked ... And Out Come the Wolves but despised Life Won't Wait, stay away from this one. -

Users found this Rancid [2000] review helpful First of all I would like to start off by stating that I totally agree with all of you on the fact that this C.D. was great. I love it. I listen to it quite often and it remains one of the best in my collection, if not the best, (the best is probably Operation Ivys greatest hits album.)
But after reading 20 or so reviews of this album. I am growing very tired of this punk rock skepticism. I am reading so much things along the lines of "real punk", "the way punk should be", "true punk" what have you. And i just need to wake you all up. why don't you go and remember what true punk has been and always will be from the 70's to present. I don't think it has to have a difinitive sound. Yes it is true that you can tell the difference between say punk and metal. But whos to say what real punk is. There are so many different punk bands that are notable for so many different things. And so many different punk enthusiasts deciding what the hell punk is what its supposed to be. You make so many rules about what punk is and what punk isn't and in doing so you negate the whole purpose of punk: to escape the rules of regular music and your everyday life. A way to break away from the boy bands shoved down your throat everyday on MTV. And yet theres so many of you people here in my eyes ruining punk by making so many damn rules and theorys on what the hell is and what isn't punk. What's wrong with you? Wake up and don't be so closed minded. Your just becoming a different form of the ones that you hate.
Another thing. Narrowing down from all of punk to just Rancid. I am upset with hearing stuff like. "so-and-so album just wasn't them" or things along the line of that. Wake up, of course it was them, look on the liner notes of the album, tell me what it sais. The music is the result of a group of people putting together their heads to make something that they want. They don't do it to please you fans and "actually sound like rancid" because what the hell is rancid anyways but what they want to make of it. They could become a boyband and it would still be rancid still be the same 4 people.
Everything that Rancid has gone through in life and experienced will shine through there music. Maybe they don't sound the same as the last album. or the one before or the one before that. Its there choice what the hell they want to do with themselves.
But don't get me wrong. I do like this album. And i do agree that it will go down in punk history as a classic.
thank you for your time. ...

Pro Reviews: Rancid [2000]
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews After several fine, if rather derivative, albums of ska-inflected punk rock, and after years of being criticized for relying unduly on gestures lifted from the Clash, Rancid has come roaring out with the harshest and most consistent album of their career. It wouldn't be entirely accurate to say that they've left their influences behind; rather, they've integrated them more completely and created a sound that is completely satisfying without having to prove anything about its own originality. That sound ends up being something like a cross between the Clash circa 1978 and the hardcore punk of the early-'80s Los Angeles scene. "Rwanda" is a stutter-step anthem of sympathy for a devastated country; "Corruption" has an atonal power-chord progression and headlong tempo that Minor Threat would have killed for; and "Blackhawk Down" is built on a ridiculously catchy descending bass line and a distinctly Oi-flavored singalong chorus. No ska, no reggae, no dub, just 22 tracks in 38 minutes with barely a pause between songs and barely a tempo under 1000 bpm. If you're looking for artistic subtlety, go back to the catalog; if all you need is a half-hour of undiluted adrenaline, you've come to the right place. - Rick Anderson, All Music Guide |
