Pro Reviews: Radiant Sea
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Brothers David and Steve Gordon traveled to Big Sur, California to capture the relaxing sounds of surf and seabirds, which form the background for much of the music. The liner notes talk about the "clear notes of a grand piano," but on "Northern Lights," the electronic altering or "extending" makes the piano sound spacious, yes, but also out of tune. This "bending" of the sound is perhaps intentional, as it is also employed on the background notes of the haunting "Windswept Pines," effectively emulating the breeze. The delicate notes of the enchanting "Moonblossom" seem like crystalline dewdrops. "Through a Child's Eyes" is a peaceful music box fairyland for clarion and guitar. "Emerald Deep" is a meditation piece similar to the languid alap of traditional Indian music. In the title cut, walls of sound seem to rub against each other, much as the sea must massage the ocean floor. "Healing" offers a heartfelt melodic arrangement for guitar, piano, keyboards, and flute. Once again, the electronic altering seemed "off," the only flaw in an otherwise refreshing and relaxing album. - Carol Wright, All Music Guide |
