    RCA CRAP

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 23, 2005 | 2 out of 3 found this RCA HDLP50W151 review helpful

Pros: Bought new technology DLP hyped by sales.

Cons: Upper left hand corner of TV started "shadowing"

I bought in good faith the HDLP50W151 RCA television. Had the set about a year, maybe a little longer. Then the upper left hand corner of the screen started to get "dark". At first it was just a little triangle type "shadowing" ab...out 2". It continued to expand every day I turned it on. Called the people I bought it from, they came and picked it up. After they looked at it they said it would take $1,000 to fix it. What I don't understand is why after only a year or so does this new DLP technology need a $1,000 worth of repair work???? If this is the BEST RCA has to offer in their TV products, they don't have much. Read more Less

Pros: it worked fine for 7 months

Cons: the color wheel and the lightbulb went after 7 months

Ipurchased this television in march of 05 and it was fine for the first 5 months until the screen developed a dark hole in the top lefthand corner . then within the next 2 months the color wheel went , $2500.00 canadian. then the lightbulb blew $1000....00 i was told this is one of the most expensive bulbs in the industry . R.C.A took 2 months to do anything about it saying the parts were on back order . I must say that they are sending me a replacement for the unit but the two months it took were unecceptable . i would not buy this television again. Read more Less

    AN EXCELLENT VIEWING EXPERIENCE

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 18, 2005 | 1 out of 2 found this RCA HDLP50W151 review helpful

    Pros: HDTV BUILT IN

    Cons: NO CABINTRY

WE HAVE OWNED THIS T.V. FOR ALMOST A YEAR NOW AND HAVE NOT HAD A BIT OF TROUBLE. I PUT A BOOKCASE ON EITHER SIDE AND BUILT A SHELF ABOVE THE T. V. CONNECTING THE TWO BOOKCASES TO MAKE THE HOME THEATER LOOK. IT HAS SO-SO STEREO SPEAKERS, BUT WE HOOKED... UP A DECENT SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM. THE BEST THING WE LIKE ABOUT THE SOUND AND PICTURE IS OUR OUTDOOR ANTENNA. WITH THE BUILT IN HDTV TUNER WE PICK UP FULL HD BROADCASTS 40 MILES AWAY SO CLEAR YOU THINK YOUR IN THE SAME ROOM WITH THE ACTORS, AND EVERY FLAW IN THEIR FACES OR BODIES REALLY STANDS OUT. HOLLYWOOD PEOPLE ARE NOT PERFECT. THE SOUND IS ENHANCED 100 PERCENT ALSO. YOU MAY GET SPOILED WITH THIS T.V. AT HOME, BUT WHEN YOU TRY TO WATCH THE GAME OR RACE ANY WHERE ELSE YOU WILL SEE A BIG DIFFERENCE. Read more Less

RCA DLP POS (Piece of *$&%)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 17, 2008

    Pros: No Burn in, cheap

Cons: No 720p, has kept falling apart since I got it

This was my 1st HD TV. I was excited in 2004 when I got this slick looking TV, but immediately we saw a smudge on the screen. After getting an RCA tech to com to the house, he couldn't figure out how to fix it and scratched the side. Okay, next R...CA tech was 1 hour away and over the course of a week we got permission to have him come and he was excellent, pulled the screen off, and removed a fuzz-ball that was making the shadow. Okay, great. Then, the motherboard failed and the TV wouldn't turn on. Another few weeks and the tech from an hour away came and fixed that. Okay, so 2004 ended with 2 service calls. 2005 the color wheel started to make loud grinding sounds. We tried louder and louder volume settings because our tech would no longer make the 1 hour each way drive, so we would have to go to him, which I did (thanks RCA) and got the color wheel fixed. The lamp blew out in 2006, covered by 3rd party warranty, so another few weeks and another one came and I swapped them out (at least that's fast, but $500 for a bulb?) Now it's 2008 and the top left corner is turning gray and the gray line is creeping down. Now all the warranties are expired, so any more fixes will be by me. I used to have an '84 trans am and i don't think i worked on that as much as this Scenium TV. NEVER BUY ONE. oh yeah, it doesn't do 720p either. Nice to know that ahead of time. Read more Less

    Serious Design Flaws

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 10, 2007

    Pros: Cheap DLP

    Cons: Maintenance!!!!

I've had this TV for almost 3 years and I've had it repaired 4 times now. Initially, there was a piece of lint behind the screen, requiring the screen to be removed & cleaned. Okay, fine. Then, the motherboard blew out 6 months later. Okay, s...till under warranty, another week w/o TV and it's fixed. Now, the bulb went out as well as the color wheel. Unfortunately, RCA has problems in the replacement dept. My second gripe was the RCA support. I had to get a repair guy from a long distance (2 hr drive) to fix the TV on repairs 1 & 2 and I had to get the per diem and mileage papers together from RCA to send to him.... why am I the middle man? This time, I just drove the TV to his place 7 weeks ago and it's been there awaiting parts from Thompson RCA ever since. WTFO??? Otherwise, the TV was just okay. The screen is very reflective so you have to keep the room dark to see the picture (this is corrected w/newer versions). The color-wheel noise was pretty annoying and louder than I expected. It's not 720p capable, and when you input a component signal it has to strech it out full screen width, so you don't have the option of keeping a 4:3 aspect ratio correct if you want a 420p signal. Otherwise it's really a sweet TV. Read more Less
