Pro Reviews: Quiet Days
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews The Battlefield Band continued to offer a very fresh-sounding take on Scottish/Celtic music with Quiet Days. Like its predecessor, New Spring, this CD demonstrated that the Scottish quartet had an extensive knowledge of Celtic traditionalism but wasn't afraid to draw on more modern pop and folk. Some of the songs have a lot of history behind them -- "Captain Campbell," for example, dates back to 1789. But many of the songs were composed by Battlefield Band members Alan Reid (vocals, keyboards), Alistair Russell (vocals, guitar), John McCusker (fiddle, whistle) or Ian MacDonald (bagpipes, flute, whistle). Despite the use of electric keyboards by two members, Quiet Days is far from sounding high-tech; it's consistently organic, never slick or overproduced. - Alex Henderson, All Music Guide |
