Pro Reviews: Purifying Fire

  • All Music Guide

Purifying Fire is without question one of the darkest CDs of all time -- certainly among the ten darkest. Using sinister drones, evil samples, and satanic synthesizer riffs, Lustmord (aka Brian Williams) has fashioned spine-tingling atmospheres that are downright black -- almost hellscapes, to coin a term. There is no wavering or fence-sitting. Lustmord has been in this arena for years. These pieces, created from 1995-1998, cover a nice cross section of his career. It is great music, too. It is fun to be scared, and this is a lot of fun. The disc will appeal to fans of Lászlo Hortobágyi, Isomorph, Jeff Greinke, Stephen Philips, and Wendy Carlos.
