not one of adam sandlers best movies but still wasnt too bad.
Pros: Dark, Endearing, Beautiful
Cons: Art House stigma
PT Anderson strikes gold again with this fascinating exploration of a very odd man at the pivotal moments of his life. Adam Sandler is impressive as Barry Egan, showing that he actually can act. Sadly, this lost him his fan base, much like I imagine Jim Carrey did for "Eternal Sunshine". While dark and often sad, I categorize this as a "feel good" movie, as it makes us appreciate what we have and how we may take it for granted.
Pros: still thinking on that one
Cons: entire movie
This is a slow, unfunny film. Some people might find the camera angles and shooting interesting.
Pros: no clue
Cons: boring, boring, boring
I couldn't watch this movie to the end. I certainly did not find it funny.
Pros: Original
Cons: Esoteric
Let me start off by saying that I don't really care for Adam Sandler, but when I saw this movie, it was a perfect role for him, since it gave his movie-personality depth and character. Also, love stories, to me, have gotten old, but this one is very original. A great attention-grabbing screenplay brings it all together into an awesome movie.
Pros: Adam Sandler
Cons: HU???
I own and operate my own video store and try to watch as many movies as I can,to help my customers get a movie they might like. I could not watch this really odd movie. Who really liked it?
I lost money on the purchace of the movie I am glad I only bought two on dvd and not any on vhs.
I did not have one person out of the five that saw it, say they liked it.
This is one massivly good movie it baffels me why it wasnt realeased in the major theaters more wide spread. Worht the money and more.
A great concept. Very interesting to watch, with some hilarious moments.
I've never felt as good as I did after I left Punch-Drunk Love. Sandler Rules, hands down.
i loved this film... go see it if you're highly intelligent or like odd humor (very odd and twisted [*spoiler*] like the pudding thing god thats awesome). this is not a mediocre film conclusively it's not for mediocre people (I mean the masses). if you didn't get magnolia you won't get this.
Paul Thomas Anderson's "Punch-Drunk Love" has great acting (from Adam Sandler!--and Emily Watson), great Robert Elswit cinematography, loopy music by Jon Brion, terrific writing and direction and a lovely 90 minute black romantic comedy story about a lonely businessman and a mystery woman who meet and fall in love in the Valley amidst phone sex goons, bizarre trucks, a harmonium (accordion and piano combined), and family troubles on Sandler's side from 7 sisters who are unsupportive, rude and mean... What's not to love?!
I loved it. It was a love story one can relate to.
This was a hard to predict, off the wall movie; very atypical role for Adam Sandler. He really did a great job portraying a guy who is right on the edge of losing it, yet a sweet love plot is still worked in without making the movie a cliche. Bravo!
Punch-Drunk Love is a brave motion picture that explores the darker side of romantic comedy. You may not think that P.T. Anderson and Adam Sandler would make an effective pairing but it is this teaming that makes the movie work on so many levels. The direction and performances by the cast are so pitch perfect it almost creates anew sub-genre of film, "a romantic comedy that actually does more than a romantic comedy should". By nature it shouldn't be this thought provoking, this abstract and yet painstakinly real. (I think anyone who is or has ever been in love can find something to identify with here)
I had the privalage of meeting both P.T. Anderson and Emily Watson breifly at the U.K. premiere (at the London film festival) in Nov 2002. These are genuine people, and fresh from viewing their work together, could see that there was a certain sense of their own emotional memory evident in the film. That must be what makes it so accurate. They spoke so passionatly of the concept demonstrated in Punch -Drunk Love that you could tell this was the case.
That said, it's certainly not to everyones taste, as a rather vocal audience member decided to make very clear to the director in a short Q & A session after the screening. I know that I liked it though, and would recommend it to anyone in need of a bit of faith in Hollywood motion pictures at the moment and of course any fans of the excellent Philip seymore Hoffman.
