    Steep Learning Curve

    By arizona_dee  Apr 27, 2001

I was first introduced to Curve two years ago - a dear friend of mine sent me three of their CDs (Pubic Fruit included) and I became a fan almost instantly. Now I'll admit that on first listen many songs sounded similar - but I like their sound so ...what's wrong with that? The two songs that were particularly outstanding are 'Galaxy' - apart from the catchy chorus 'won't say no - it won't way yes' it has a rhythmic flow to it that seamlessly joins all the unique elements of the song. There's a sexiness to Toni's effortless and self-assured vocals that made me want to learn the lyrics as fast as I could so i could sing along ;o)The music is only let down by sound quality (it was originally recorded on tape) so the limitations of that medium are noticeable, but if you can look (or listen) beyond that and persist with it you will definitely be rewarded. This is definitely one album that bears repeated listening and those quirks turn out to be the parts that will probably be appreciated the most. Pro Reviews: Pubic Fruit

  • All Music Guide

Pubic Fruit is not a proper follow-up to Curve's debut full-length, but, instead, it gathers together three of the band's earlier E.P. releases which had only been released in the U.K. and adds the previously unavailable 12" version of "Fait Accompli." Despite the album being a compilation of sorts, it holds together quite nicely and provides a good look at the band's work up until their debut release. Much of the material is produced by the band and Steve Osborne and isn't nearly as dense as their debut which benefited from their work with Flood. The non-focus tracks of the E.P.s are every bit the equal of the songs that eventually found their way onto Doppelganger with many of them being true gems. "No Escape From Heaven" features a sultry vocal performance by Toni Halliday over a galloping percussive beat and drive-by bursts of guitar. And "Cherry" is the high-point of this collection. The song starts out quietly with hushed vocals and subtle keyboards before the drums signal a blas...t of fuzz guitars and everything crashes into a riveting sound collage. - Tom Demalon, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Curve

Considering Curve's towering monolith of guitar noise, dance tracks, dark goth, and airy melodies, it's strange that their two core members -- guitarist Dean Garcia and vocalist Toni Halliday -- met through David Stewart of Eurythmics. Halliday met Stewart while she was a teenager and they remained friends for years; Garcia played on Eurythmics' Touch and Be Yourself To... Read more
