After splitting from their former band Pessimist in 1999, Baltimore-based vocalist Rob Kline, bassist Tony Pernia and drummer Chris Pernia started playing with guitarists Mike Baron and Jeremy Grande. Originally naming themselves Excathedra, the group recorded a demo and performed at the 2000 ~Milwaukee Metal Fest before saying goodbye to Baron and renaming themselves Psychotogen (which purportedly signifies any agent that causes or induces psychosis).
