For those who've never heard of the aforementioned APP, they were a two-man rock musician/umbrella production collective that ran between 1975 and 1987 and who released groundbreaking concept albums featuring interchangable band 'members' and are often creditted with inventing the concept of "widescreen, cinematic music".

Protection sees Massive Attack using the same format to create ten tracks of rich texture and cinematic mood, in a style that's all their own. Everything But The Girl's Tracey Thorn's immaculate vocal on the opening title track is the zenith of this album, but the others are just as good - Sly, Better Things and Karmacoma show glimpses of the path taken by Tricky and Portishead just over the horizon. The only thing that, in my view, robs this album of a 5-Star rating is the disjointed cover of The Doors' Light My Fire.

    get out some good weed...

    ...and put on this album.
if you compare "protection" to massive' s other work, it nearly sounds like a "pop"- record with very clean, relaxed sounds and very harmonic vocals.
"protection" may not be as consistent as both "mezzanine" and "blue lines", but it has some tracks you' ll never forget in your whole life: the phantastic piano- driven instrumental "heat miser", the symphonic, james bond- like "sly" or the title track which is one of the most beautiful songs to make love to ever.

    a true classic.

    Among the best!

This Massive attack CD is definetly among my top 10 CDs. The smooth piano melodies accompanied by eardrum shaking bass beats are amazing. The voices play along excellently with the music. This album has made me a life long Massive Attack fan!

    Nothing comes closer

Brilliant blue note electronic bar muzack! Massive Attack have produced a superb followup to Blue Lines; a much darker exploration which brings Portishead's Dummy to mind. The vocalists selected are excellent complements to the instrumental backing (and continual loops); Tricky in particular stands out. The layering of sound throughout is amazing; you will hear more every time you listen. Definitely a must-have. It's absolutely stunning dark and moody lo-fi trip-hop.

    PURE GREATNESS

If you have not heard this album, what are you waiting for. The Second album from the band of the 90's is a mellow affair with some of the best vocals you will hear. TRACY THORN is immaculate on the title track and HORACE ANDY (Underrated or What!) is absolutely fantastic on SPYING GLASS. Just Buy it, Listen to it and Smoke to it. CHILLIN
